THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT REVIEW AND APPLES TO APPLES!
I dont know if its applicable, but It would be appreciated to include results for the LCD users than run at 1280X1024 for example. I would assume these cards can run anything 1280x1024 at max anyway.
I noticed that BT included the SLI 6800gt (thanks!) but why not the solo 6800gt?

You will see little or no difference between a pair of these and a pair of 7800 GTX's at 1280x1024 in all honesty. :)

Unfortunately the review was very pushed for time - I got the four cards on Tuesday and had to turn the review around by midday Thursday in order for there to be enough time to get the article proofed to a reasonable standard. I had to use results that I'd already got from the Gainward review that was published on Tuesday because there was only enough time to benchmark the four 7800 GT configurations.
If there had been more time, there would have been a single 6800 GT or Ultra included too. Such is the way with NDA's some of the time - you don't get a lot of time to get everything done if you want to make the deadline.
I just picked these brands as they where the best matched for price, but the question is more aimed at the difference between SLI / non-SLI and 6600GT 256Mb / 7800GT 256Mb cards.
My thoughts are that a single 7800GT 256Mb card will perform the same as 2x 6600GT 256Mb (512Mb total) cards running in SLI (on an SLI optimised game) if not better.
Has anyone tried benchmarking these two types of setups?
If this is the case I guess the 7800GT 256Mb will be the best choice, as it will leave a spare 16xPCIExpress slot for further upgrade to SLI.
If someone has a SLI 6600GT setup that beats a single 7800GT would be very interested in seeing benchmarks...
the only difference support wise is cineFX 4.0, Intellisample 4.0 on the 7800GT where it is 3.0 on 6600GT. Just interested if the extra pipelines and smaller manufacturing techniques make one 7800GT better than two 6600GT.
Two GeForce 6600 GT's aren't much faster than GeForce 6800 GT - you will be better purchasing a single 7800 GT as it'll be a faster card on its own. It depends whether you just want SLI for namesakes, or whether you want the best performance possible for the money. I want to see NVIDIA improve on the texture filtering a bit - there are some instances where I've noticed some shimmering, even with all optimisations turned off.

As always BT is #1 for tech news
