Yeah I entered the comp too, but notice anything about the spec? Despite Alienware's website proudly declaring "Alienware recommends Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional.", they're shipping the prize with... "Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition".
To try to undercut dell you would first buy it =) Since they don't have all the specs on their website (maybe I just couldn't find them). Maybe you wouldn't be able to undercut it's price but I am almost sure that custom PC bought from newegg let's say could totally beat dell in performance for the same price. But then in order to make a fair battle you would also have to buy legal version of windows, some software and few years warranty (if not included with the purchase). That software would probably change all the things around making it cheaper to buy at dell (if you want services and warranties included).
have any of you guys looked at the wc alienware's? clicky except they are like 5 grand usd, any one want to buy one and tell us about it. i think that their cases look pimp, how do they look bad? i would always build my own cuz of what fev said. alienware should sell just their cases and proly make more money that way. also from what i have heard alienware build ok systems. i would rather buy alienwares gamimg rig then dells gaming rig, if i had to buy form one of them.
Awesome rig if you can afford it, But if you cant, tuff :o
its like everything else, mr.average buys a house, and a car(say, a ford, or a toyota) and lives happily, then mr.rich comes along and buys a big house, and a flashy car (ferrari, lamborghini). Its just about how much money you`ve got and what you do with it... But personally i`d rather build my own and save that £700.
Bit-Tech could do much better you know :) This forum is frequented by modding geniuses, hardware deities, and electronic gurus, get them together and you have Bit-Tech Systems!

You're assuming that anyone who can afford it, automatically buys it. Everyone I know can afford a $3,000 computer; but everyone I know prefers to build their own.
(For that matter, same deal with the house and the car. Some people don't feel the need to live in a 3500sqft house, not because they can't afford it, but because it's pointlessly wasteful)
The alienware (to me) seems targeted at the console crowd. People who just want to take the machine out of the box and stick games in it, without putting any effort into the machine itself. But these are the same people that are used to "upgrading" by buying an entirely new computer, not swapping out a motherboard. It's just a different way of looking at computing. (It's fine with me, it just means I can get used computer equipment on craigslist for cheap :D )
What do you expect? If you're buying Alienware Star Wars Theme you think you'll get little Jedi's in the DVD Drive that LightScribe your DVD's with they sabers?
You mentioned about the floppy drive for the raid drivers and why didnt they ship it with a usb key, since i have never booted off one, i would think you would still need a floppy drive for drivers when installing XP?
If that is the case why do they not intergrate the raid drivers into the XP install?

Cheapskates.
edit: spelling
There are places where Rent falls into roughly the $350 a month. Trust me, its not un-reasonable at all.

Thats like 3 centuries into the future!
I mean it's a good DVD writer.... Big deal
If that is the case why do they not intergrate the raid drivers into the XP install?
