Nothing uptight about Dragon Age though. The main character pretty much gets the option to do anything to anything. I'm currently playing as a squeaky clean hero type, as I usually do on the first try, but next go I'm going to get all Bishop of Bath and Wells on this thing. Oh yes, I am that juvenile.
This saturday I finally found time to get my hands dirty in this game, and I must say it did not disappoint. I was hooked into it straight from the intro, and suddenly the time was 0520 ... hopefully I will get time to play more during the week as I have taken out two vacation days on wednesday and thursday. I am going to use the days to wreak mayhem upon our bathroom that needs doing up, but I think I should be able to sneak some hours of Origins gibbage in there at night. :D

I had issues with the DLC and was ready to throw my mouse through monitor. However real easy fix. You log into the site, create password proflie blah blah blah. Imput all of your codes.
THENNNNNNNN go to DLC in the in game menu and what you have to do is click the "log-in" button at the lower left which is hidden pretty well. Then it will "sync" for lack of a better word --- how I loathe apple --- and your downloads will automatically start and all the glory associated with it will ensue. You will have the items pop into your inventory and the side quests avaliable.
Side note defiantely addicted to this game and it is pretty much BG only with more blood and silly sexyness.
You know... I was really looking forward to this game, and after playing it for a while, I have to agree with the review. Its decently fun to play, has an epic story, and gives you a nice fuzzy feeling that you are playing a game made by the same people who did BG and NWN, but the over simplification does hurt. On one hand, the tactics editor is a very nice addition, but on the other hand why why WHY isn't it completely unlocked by default rather than having to gain tactics points? The real killer though is the inability to cue up actions. The game tends to dissolve into micromanagement hell in larger battles because all you're doing is reassigning orders instead of being able to cue up a set of spells/skills to be cast. That being said... this games falls a close second in terms of current generation RPGs. I still think The Witcher is the best RPG to come out in the last 5 years mainly because it manages to innovate so much (combat system, spell system, controls, leveling/progression, story) while still maintaining that classic RPG look and feel. It took a major risk, and the risk paid off, even with its initial flaws (oh, and there were MANY flaws). Dragon Age was far less risky of a game, and thus while its a very well done title, it doesn't quite reach the heights The Witcher attained. Now... here's hoping the final cutscene of Dragon Age can even come close to the one in The Witcher...
The reason tactics slots have to be unlocked is that they are a character trait. If you run a team of min-maxed lunkheads who only know how to mash faces with maces then you're going to have to micromanage because they won't have the options. Meanwhile give them enough tactics and cunning and bosh, you can basically rig them to fight the whole battle themselves. My big gripe was a couple of teething troubles with the tactics system that saw a couple of my guys basically quaff what should have been a weeks supply of healing and lyrium potions in a single fight. Also not managing to stop one of my toons from quaffing an ultra-high end healing doohickey after a fight ended.
On the next playthrough I'm going to be a machine of getting tactics right, and I should have a handle on how to work magic too, I messed up all my mages pretty badly in their builds.
My biggest regret with the game is really not getting to grips with the system at all and all my characters were a mess. I say were a mess as I finally completed it this morning after another all nighter. What a massive game. I'm going to play through it again but I think I need a hit of that, what's it called, sunlight? That old thing. That'll fix me up. Then back in.
It must have been tough for poor old Bioware...the Baldur's Games had a fanatically devoted fan base and they obviously didn't want to alienate them but needed to attract more fans. The AI in Baldur's Gate looked like it had been put together by a bunch of undergrads having fun and it was infectious. I LOVED the games. My big fear with any "spiritual successor to BG" was that it would take itself too seriously. It think Bioware skirted that fear very well with Dragon Age. The other thing I was worried about was that it would be made too easy (to attract "casual" gamers, you know, the console brigade - grrrrrrrrr!). In fact, there are a lot of easy killsbut also some very tough fights (the ones that have you reloading 10-15 times, GREAT when you finally kill the beast). Sorry bit-tech, but I agree with Quake1-rules: poor review. The reviewer obviously didn't want do the review (it's "Morrigan", not "Morgan") and had a quick look at the game before dashing off a very poor review.
The problem is we get so few 'real' RPG's nowadays (as opposed to the Jade Empire/Mass Effect 'Action' RPG's), that few know how to review them any more!
This review was a long complaint that the game took too long to 'liven up'. Well, in a 100 hour RPG, how long is too long? If this reviewer got what he wanted we would have had another 'action' RPG - which is no RPG at all actually!
I mean they call games like Borderlands RPG-Shooter's, but do they really think by doing that they will attract any RPG fans to a game that, let's face it, is 90% shooter? Equally, If they just marketed it as a shooter, would they have lost any shooter fan sales because of the light RPG elements?
True RPG's are a dying genre, and I wouldn;t be surprised if, in a couple of years, we will be talking about RPG's like we now talk about Adventure games! This review proves that, because the overall feeling I got from the review was someone who dosn't really know about real RPG's any more!
I got it for the 360 rather than the PC as my PC is old and I can't afford to upgrade. Was worried that the controls would be a pain on console but they're great. Admittedly the PC will have better controls and I do miss the tactical camera and being able to tell everyone in my party to run away, but it's still good.
The game itself is already one of my all time favourite RPGs with BG2 and FFVII now. I've already spent about 40 hours on it and can see me doing at least that to complete the game. I still don't feel like I've broken the back of the game. I always feel when I get to that point where the story is coming at me hard and fast that the end is nigh.....but I still think I have a while to get there.
I finished my first play through the other day (almost 110 hrs. clocked on the game, but maybe closer to 120 hrs. actual if I count the reloads and whatnot).
Awesome game.
I'm not sure I can say that it's the best RPG I've ever played, but it's gotta be pretty close. I haven't been this 'attached' to characters in a quite a while (not since KotOR, perhaps? Or the characters in the Longest Journey games? I don't remember).
While it may have started a bit slow, it certainly does pick up the pace.
The ending? At least the one I got...definitely worth the time spent. One of the better game endings in a while for me, too. (to compare to another BioWare game: I enjoyed Mass Effect's rather epic ending, but it didn't 'hit hard' or leave me 'tired', in a good way, that Dragon Age's ending did)
While the graphics weren't the 'greatest', I don't think it detracted from the gaming experience whatsoever (heck, I found some sights/locations rather beautiful, and the characters were quite well designed, IMHO). I do agree w/ some who state that there's too much gore, but I didn't have any real problem w/ that either. The 'sex' bit was also a bit 'off', but understandable after all the noise caused by Mass Effect (tho' I do agree w/ some who think that 'fading to black' instead of the 'granny's underpants' solution would have been better).
Also, I loved the voice acting (Aeryn Sun! Claudia Black and Steve Valentine were great as Morrigan and Alistair). If I had any complaint about the voice acting, it was that one of the more well known actors who lent his voice could have had more 'screen time' (or whatever the gaming equivalent could be).
Dang, now I have to wait for an expansion or a sequel...
this review pretty much hits it on the head.. didn't get to really appreciate the game until I finished all the content over the weekend.. reminds me alot of guildwars but way clunkier- more turn based cause you pretty much pause, tell the heros what to do, pause, repeat until a battle is finished
there's enough soap opera content to fill up hours.. sometimes I thought to myself- I WANT to hear all this crap, but damnit it's eating up a half hour lol
finally got wynn's stories out of her too.. turns out she set a mages eyebrows on fire.. there's alot of good storytelling, and I'm happy with that end of it.. saw sooo much guildwars inspired content I'd almost say the devs were hardcore players =] alot of the mage spells were direct ports with different names.. when getting to hespeth.. reminds me of the flesh tunnels in gates :D
here's some screens.. game is not really long but there's soo much voice acting and lore- it's out of control.. not to mention I turned out to be bi-sexual in game and banging everything that moved

I was a little sketchy after Joe's review, but having missed previous Bioware RPG's I was determined to pick this one up.
Not disappointed, that's for sure....though the blood spatter's a bit over the top.
