Fear always had a strange relationship between action and fear. Few games can really pull off proper bang-bang action scenes AND scary moments without resorting to cheap monster-in-the-closet tactics. A brooding atmosphere doesn't exactly go hand-in-hand with huge gunfights.
I enjoyed the game. There are some beautiful areas to see. The settings are really nice especially after you meet snakefist. The subway and concrete areas are very well crafted. Then there's the two tram sequences which I liked a lot. Fear2 is fun! Its worth $30 for sure, if you like single player FPS.
The reviewer expects the Shakespearean writing, but I submit that almost all militaristic single player FPS games are rather predictable. Only game I can think of which wasn't is Chronicles of Riddick, maybe.
The one big negative about Fear2 which wasn't mentioned in this review is that the multiplayer is lacking in essentials. There are no dedicated servers and there is no cheat protection like punkbuster. Also there are no dev tools for modders. Monolith hasn't promised anything either. This is a good reason why the game isn't worth the full $50 for someone who likes multiplayer as I do.

It's not that I want great writing, so much. I love games with crappy writing too, like Serious Sam. It's just that the story and characters and twists here are so depressingly predictable and there's so much of them. It's generic and overdone. Does that make sense?
Deus Ex tried something different for its sequel and got slated for it and F.E.A.R. opts for a variation on its original concept and gets slated for it. I suppose its also an issue if you have to play every shooter on the market for review purposes as opposed to simply buying the ones that you like. Personally, I'm enjoying F.E.A.R. 2 and I don't have a problem with the similarites with its predecessor or any other FPS game on the market past or present. As for multiplayer, its not my thing so its absence isn't a problem for me.

I don't get it? Deus Ex 2 and FEAR 2 both weren't all that remarkably different from their prequels. And...I'm confused.

He's trying to say that Deus Ex 2 did something different, and was slated, and Fear 2 did something similar, and was slated. However, he's wrong on two accounts:
1) Deus Ex 2 was similar to the first one. Just watered down and crappy.
2) Doesn't make the blindest bit of difference if the game is good. Look at Doom 2: nigh on identical to Doom, pure brilliance.
Ah, I see. Well, the issue here is that FEAR (which I refuse to punctuate in the forums) was scary mainly because games hadn't been scary like that before. Japanese horror was fashionable and good-looking FPS horror games like that were pretty rare.
Now though, we've had FEAR, two expansion packs, Condemned, Condemned 2, Eternal Darkness, Call of Cthulu, etc, all just off the top of my head. The FEAR formula is getting a bit familiar now, which means it isn't that scary, which means it's essentially becomes a corridor shooter with bullet-time. It isn't bad at doing that, but that doesn't mean it does it hugely well.

Yes I think I see what you mean. I think they were trying to keep the story relevant and topical to the gameplay. As you point out, it's a little much. I think many people need a story to hand-hold them through the game.
I'm with you to a degree. I'd almost be okay with a story of 'escape the nuclear blast area' and let that get me through the whole game with almost no characters and voice overs, etc.. :) But I found FEAR2 more fun than half-life 2 (I didn't finish HL2).
I foresee many, many hours of pure fun in my future (some of which will involve me playing FEAR 2, and others will involve me observing my GF playing FEAR 2 - which is pure hilarity :D ).
I greatly enjoyed the original FEAR, and the demo for FEAR 2 was immersive, scary and interesting. Sure I do see the reviewer's point about it getting samey after a while, and that it is basically a repetition of identical corridors, but how is that different from any other FPS out there? Eventually the levels/corridors will feel identical to the ones earlier in the game, and this I've found is true for pretty much all FPS's - even including Fallout 3 (which I love unquestionably).
That said though, I too have difficulty relating the FEAR 2 mechs with the story, but I'm willing to let that one pass. I mean - they're giant robots! Pure cheesecake!
I remembered another thing about this game that isn't mentioned in the review. There is absolutely no stealth factor it it. Once the AI has been alerted to your presence, it knows exactly where you are at all times. FYI... (still though its a fun game and one of the few FPS' I played through to the end)

good solid shooter.
confirming this
also the stake gun (HV-1 Penetrator in FEAR1, Hammerhead in FEAR2) is one of my all time favourite weapons, theres something extremely satisfying about shooting 6" metal stakes at people on full auto :D
It's been a long time since I was excited by a Monolith game. I wish they would make a new NOLF instead of generic horror shooter the sequel. I mean sure I get some enjoyment from FEAR 2, but it's hardly going to win any awards...
Mr. Martin, in the DEMO the option to lean was missing in the keymapping. Is it missing in the full game as well? (Another victim of console conversion?)

M'eh, it would be if it weren't for the fact that even on normal skill it still requires two stakes through the skull of a grunt to kill them, IMHO. Not that Monolith can't make good guns - the sniper rifle in this is massively fun and over-powered and the guns in NOLF are fantastic.
It diserved an 8, not a 7 :P simply cuz its solid
not because it has been done before or not : hahah
Simply cuz the game is intended for 2 things.
1) Shoot the Crap out of lame Soldiers
2) Cry like a baby when u get a red screen and u see the girls shadow in front of you, you turn around and she is gone :S
I belive that having that in mind, those 2 things are covered completly
its a mediocre shooter at best, im near the end and tbh im bored, biggest problem is its just too easy, im going back to the original FEAR as the combat was more satisfying

Pressing 2 keys instead of one? Well done brains.
As for fear2 meh lol
2 keys over 8+ shift/caps
As for the game, seems to look interesting and hopefully not as bland as the first. will look forward to trying it out come the weekend.
He said fullstops, no one mentioned FEAR :P
