I was always more of a Warhammer Fantasy geek than 40k, but had a couple of 40k armies too as most of my friends played 40k... so any Warhammer game is usually destined for my CD/DVD shelves. Really enjoyed Dawn of War.
But every time I experience Games for Windows (Live) I get the distinct impression that Microsoft is deliberately trying to sabotage the PC gaming experience. :(

I have the same feeling regarding Games for Windows, i think steam could do a much better job.
I posted a thread regarding this on the beta forums just moments before my Google reader updated the bit tech RSS with this story :)

Got it on pre order (colelctors edition) and downloading the BETA on STEAM now. Cos I already have SoulStorm on disk I jsut activated it on steam and the BETA started downloading itself. Enjoy the now 11 hour wait lol.
From what I can tell so far is that it has almost been turned into a multiplayer game first with a single player version of that rather than the other way around as before. It seems that it has been designed to be really fast to get into and get into the fighting without having to concentrate on choices made as to when you are able to take a break from managing the fighting and set your base building to the next stage.
I have still yet to play this as I don't have soulstorm as yet and I am more than willing to give it a chance and a decent look though, it is just that from what I have seen and heard so far it has been designed for players who are more along the lines of 'can't be bothered with having to build a base, just want to kill things' which is not really me.
I will say it now to get it out of the way; it is a damn awesome game, judging from the Beta.
However, GFWL is damn awful. Matchmaking is awful. For a game so well implemented in Steam, I was hoping for a system much better, but alas. High pings, disconnects, the effort involved with finding a non-laggy match with people using settings their computer can actually handle; it's a nightmare.
No base building is Warhammer and that also goes for many games converted from board game to video game. As for cost per unit, the first DOW used the same point system as the board game. If anything the points should stay the same but the attack power of the unit be adjusted. So far I've cleaned house with the Orks. I've noticed people like to whore the Eldar assault tank but my AT crews just clean them up.
Hate GFWL and Steam requirement. I also hate going back to 4 armies blehh.

This isn't the Tyranids debut in a computer game as they were in both Space Crusade and Space Hulk if I remember rightly.
I played them on the Amiga many years ago. :)
Those were genestealers, and iirc pre-date the Tyranids in Warhammer 40k - they were originally just Geiger Alien rip-offs for the Space Marines to fight, but proved so popular that Games Workshop adapted them into their own full race. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.
contrary to the review, getting pounded mercilessly by experienced player in BETA would make me want to buy the game even more... so i can learn the ropes and return the favour.
I've been playing this for the last week and I'm not impressed. it feels like a 40k mod for CoH, that's had half of the game play removed. It's almost as if this had been designed for a console, in fact I could imagine it working quite well on the 360/PS3.
The other problem is it's slow, requisition takes ages to collect and the units move at a snails pace. It's a good thing that the 6 player maps are tiny as otherwise it would take a week for units to get across it. I'm rellay hoping the campaign is a shiny beacon of awesomeness, because nothing else will convince me to pick it up.
Thanks to relicnews.com I learned that you could activate your retail copy of Soulstorm on steam... (also came across other retail games you can activate like Prey! It's like getting records with digital download coupons).
Since then I have been playing the hell out of this beta. I quickly got up to speed on how to play the game and have moved my way to rank 7 over the weekend in the random ranked match making. Playing public games is the only way to play annihilation mode though, the matchmaking/rank is all victory point. I am a little confused about what gaining rank does though, the equipment you unlock I haven't seen in game. I enjoy the new play style because it is more like what the Lore entails. The last time I really appreciated a specific Space Marine unit was the game Chaos Gate.
GFWL is snappy, and works like you expect live to on the Xbox 360. But terribly unnecessary; at least it works. I guess the plus is that you get your live profile and will gain some achievements Microsoft live style. I have not touched the Tyranids, Eldar, or Orks. Nor will I ever. I fight for humanity. To battle brooothers!

CoH will recieve a HUGE patch in the next few months with the release of the 2nd add-on pack Tales of Valour, so fear now.
Personally, I still prefer CoH to DoW2, but that's probably because i've just been playing CoH for longer!
Yeah I just received a couple of losses last night due to the game breaking apart and server crashing... Maybe I should try DoW, you never know before you try, huh?

GFWL?!
Please stop using GFWL for your games, guys.. You're just appeasing Hitler.

And both those games were pap anyways :P

Walk softley and carry a big gun!
DoW2 is fun. Aside from a few bugs keeping friends from joining games (through GFWL) I am loving almost every part of this game.
