I have never cared much about the storyline of any Grand Theft Auto games. Only game I even attempted to do all the missions was the VERY FIRST game, Grand Theft Auto that came out for PC in 1997. Actually I just treat the games as a sandbox urban environment simulator and I drive around and just have fun. So the better graphics the better no matter what. GTA IV is the best one so far in this respect. Actually I wish they could make a GTA for each of the major cities in the world so we could take virtual tourism to another level. Google Earth isn't quite there yet even with it's 3D modeled sky scraper buildings added on now (look at New York). And yes I know Liberty City is only inspired by New York and not even close to a 1:1 copy. But even an inspired copy would be enough for me. I'm sure it comes down to IP rights and such to do a total clone and also a lot more work.
Then about Fallout 3, yes it's probably really cool for those who actually care for the Role Playing stuff. I myself don't care about that at all and I just want to be dropped into the action, and not have to answer a ton of questions before I even get to free roam. I think I played the game for about 5 minutes then got bored. I've watched some gameplay movies posted by the players on the net and some of the combats do seem cool, but that doesn't matter when you have to suffer this boring intro before you get to that. Get rid of the RPG stuff or at least tone it down quite a lot Bethesda and I might revisit the game. Seems like Bethesda and Blizzard are RPG-developers only. A shame.
Far Cry 2, yes I actually spent almost an hour in game in this. Driving around between missions. YAY is this GTA i'm playing? Can I just blow up everything now please? Where are the mods that actually make this game fun? I also hunted for diamons which was quite the novel mini game...NOT! I've been picking up diamonds in games since Sonic and Super Mario.
So I'm left with waiting around for Half-Life 2: Episode Three while testing one lackluster game after another. I'm sure 2009 will not disappoint.
Oh btw. The games I actually do enjoy for those who wonders: Half-Life series, Counter-Strike: Source, Battlefield 2, TrackMania series, Left 4 Dead, Portal, Grand Theft Auto series.
Yes many of them are multiplayer games so that might be unfair to the singleplayer games I just bashed to hell. But yeah. I enjoy them nevertheless.
1. Fallout 3- Bethesda makes **** games that wanks think are revolutionary. ES I do admit at the time was a good series. Black Isle Studios will always be the greats behind Fallout.
2. RA3- Westwood died when EA took over. RA2 is still better.
3. Far Cry 2- No Comment
4. COD5- COD4 set the bar too high and Treyarch is stuck in WWII.
5. Spore- Lack of depth. If Spore was like Civ IV in the way of depth, it would of been an outstanding game.
Runner Ups: 1. GTAIV- Seemed like a downgrade. Vice City still best GTA IMO. 2. Prince of Persia. 3. Left 4 Dead- Survival horror or arcade shooter? 4. Playstation Home 5. Soulcalibur IV.
I'd gladly trade graphics for gameplay. I'm getting sick of pretty **** with no play value.
One of the most ridiculous things about Alone In The Dark was the boxart. Not sure what weapons you use in the game, but the gun on the cover is a crossman pelletgun. You can clearly see the screw holes on the side. The only thing that was removed was the logos.

I have a very good idea. I just had a small lan party, and GTA4 was nice in gameplay, but a complete disaster in quality. I had a laptop with a 2Ghz C2D, 2Gb mem and a 8600M GS. Not the fastest, but I could play crysis smooth on low settings.
Yes, that is crysis, on of the biggest. And it looked nice on low detail.
But, after getting a shitload of crap on my pc just to install GTA4, it wouldn't even run smooth. 15 fps at the lowest of lowest. The graphics looked outdated to antiquated, but still it was very heavy on rescources. this made it barely playable.
And it's buggy. Regularly textures appeared just after I hit the thing it was supposed to be on. Once I was floating in the sky because it forgot to render the road below me. That wasn't because it needed time for it, it just didn't load it.
To sum it up: lots of irritating software, VERY low performance and a bit buggy on textures on low settings.
Just a quick note to say that with STALKER, even with the latest patch, if you try and quick load after you die before getting back to the main menu it crashes for me. It was very frustrating having to re-load the entire game when I died.
Turned out to be just me being impatient causing most of the problems.
I will agree with spore as i got it quite soon after it came out played it for 20 mins and it sat on my shelf since and keeps on getitng comments from friends asking whats it like.

I blame console gamers.
bit-tech readers could vote for the GOTY List, GTA4 was an option, I bet if bit would have said specifically pc version GT4 would be no where close to the top 10, but the console version would be in the top 3.
Simply put, I suspect people who played GT4 on a console voted for it which isn't really fair as it's good on the consoles, but a horrible mess on the pc due to several websites you have to sign up, several logins required to play, crappy graphics (for a pc game), far too high hw requuirements for how it looks, was released late even though it was not improved and so on...

and it deserved both spots. it had so much potential that even though they ruined the experience the game is still one of the best of the year.

It was specifically said - there were two entirely different lists, for PC and console, with GTA IV listed on both.

True, but GT4 for consoles = huge success, GT4 for PC = failure, yet GT4 for Pc managed to make a top 10 best games list, it has to be influenced by the console version or rather people voting for it due to how the console version was great.
i won't say GTA4 for PC is a failure, if you can get pass the technical hiccups, it's an fantastic game. much more responsive and less blur than the console version, even on lowest settings.
I'm sorry, but did anyone really expect anything of Haze?? FC2 was a case of careful editing. Every promo video was cut to hide the underwhelming truth.
S:CS definitely deserves it's mention, not because it was a bad game, but because it took a rough-diamond like S:SC and took it backwards...
The abortion of a game called Red Alert 3 is by far the biggest dissapointment for me this year. Partially because i fell for the hype and bought it and partially because playing the game reminded me how old the games feels and I am actually just playing this to satisfy the intermission movie clips (which are also balls except for the Rising Sun featuring their hulking mecha).
Fallout 3 is stunning but the level capping seriously broke it for me. Espcially after realising I cannot get used to it as originally thought. RPG imho should have a level cap of 99 or something :p hybrid FPS/RPG or not.

not really had many letdowns this year. not bothered with RA3 nor GTA4, FO3 was entertaining but then id never played the originals

Anyway, I think Fable 2 should be mentioned somewhere as being very good :).
Annoying games this year:
- Red alert 3
- farcry 2 (just too repetitive, all it needs for fixing is a bit more imagination)
as for the others havent actually played them.. but the bad press surrounding them really did put me off buying them.
Stalker Clear Sky needing the Patches...I got the first Stalker for Christmas...by now the patches should work! ;-)
I,mmm getting pretty bored at Fallout 3 also...mainly due to the huegely unintersting landscape/colours.
oh about Patches...RA3 doesnt work properly either
It's so utterly horrible that it woudn't have been a fair Top 5 failures competition if it would have entered the ring.
