My main issue is the lack of emotions. There's no drama and there's no wit so far. The annoying checkpoints as well as the lack of "life" adds to my disappointment.
What i'm absolutely impressed with, is the map-editor. I mean seriously, isn't this thing great?
I am really enjoying this game actually. The comments about no chickens: there are lots of chickens, at least where I am looking.
As for no being able to defend yourself if you have a sniper rifle - I am currently using a sniper rifle, Mac10 and a LMG and seem to be doing OK. I could quite happily swap one of those for something like a grenade launcher but currently have no need to. I did prefer the original Far Cry's approach to weapons though, being able to carry four but I do like to having to worry too much about ammo.
My tactic with the checkpoints is to get in a Land Rover (if you look at them, how can you call them anything other?) drive at them really fast then once I get close switch to the MG. The car carries on driving at them but I am in the gunner's position :)
majorly late edit: In response to all those who are complaining about lack of animals - I have found gazelle/antelope things, chickens, zebras buffalo and goats. I think that is all, but that is quite a large number of things which are only there to be pretty.
lol edit: A zebra has just run in to my Land Rover whilst it was stationary (the car not the zebra) killing itself and making my car smoke!
For anyone else suffering mouse lag, I hope this will be useful:
I searched all over the net and there are lots of "solutions" being posted. Some people say you just turn the mouse smoothing off (in the config file as well as in-game). Some say turn v-sync off. Others say use DX9 mode. Still more say use your graphics card control panel to set max prerendered frames to 0 (not 3 which is default for my graphics card anyways).
None of the above worked for me on their own but...
DX9 mode AND setting max pre-rendered frames to 0 in the nvidia control panel WORKED!
I can now actually play the game! And now that I can aim, a lot of the other flaws seem a lot less of a big deal...it really is a fun game.
So anyway hope that works for someone else too :)
For reference this is for an 8800GTS 320MB with the latest 'beta' Nvidia driver with FarCry 2 fix (180.43)
I have been reading a lot on the Ubi forums about FC2 now, and some of the main complaints are these:
Enemies at the frequent checkpoints respawn extremely fast forcing you to fight your way through the same checkpoints every time you need to get somewhere for a mission. This truly is a PITA.
Game looks very generic, with a beautiful template filled with repetive shoot-out style missions and fights that basically are bot matches.
Game looks lifeless due to complete lack of civilians and very scarce appearances of animals.
Story is just a wrapper because there are few references to it in-game; mostly you're just on some "go there and kill that guy(s)" missions.
Multiplayer works very bad; you often lose your connection, don't find a server at all you can enter, and apparently you cannot make sure you and your buddies are on the same server, lose stats/achievements when getting disconnected during the match. FC1 fans also miss the assault mode.
Custom key binding doesn't always work and isn't even possible for certain game functions (e.g. steering the hang glider or exiting stationary guns); apparently this has been ported very sloppily from the console version.
There is no logical scheme to why you get detected and enemies often enough see you from very away and through dense vegetation.
Hitboxes and weapon balance are off; the pistols are e.g. insanely accurate, often clear headshots don't hit, or you have to literally fill a T-shirt clad opponent with lead to kill him.
The mouse seems to be laggy particularly on Vista systems and with DX10.
I have to say that while I still enjoy the game all of the above criticism is true and justified. This game may have deserved a 6.5 or 7 but definitely not a 9 or higher. Maybe a patch will change that, but the questions are whether and when that will happen, and what will be done for the console players (or can you deploy let's say a 300 MB game patch on an XBox 360?)
Personally I dislike the checkpoints most and really miss the life and connection to the story in the game. While I wouldn't want to have the checkpoints completely removed, I'd like to have them re-staffed less frequently and possibly randomly so you never quite know whether you will run into one or not.

Yes, terrible was an exaggeration, but bittech giving it a 9, lol. This game is at its best average, so much wrong with it, another example of reviews being off their rockers here. I knew it wa gonna be so though with ubi and Cross platform being involved, i argued with people for months that it was not gonna be the second coming, just wish I was not atupid and followed my own advice and ended up wasting 50 bucks on it, lol. Anyone wanna trade a copy of FC2 for Fallout 3?
I do not want to give the wrong impression so let me say from the start that I really Far Cry 2 so far (I'm 50% through the game). The game is stunning graphically and I love the weapon system and upgrades. The missions are cool as well as the open world and multiple paths to completion. However, there are some things that really tic me off (and this is just on normal difficulty):
Maybe it's me, but I think I should be able to miss someone from 500 yards away with my silenced Dart Rifle (and equipped with a Camo Suit) and NOT have the whole map after me.
Maybe it's me, but I think that if I unload an entire clip of my Silent Makarov 6P9 into the chest of a person who is not even wearing a shirt, they should be DEAD instead of smiling at me calmly.
Maybe it's me, but I think that an enemy with Homeland 37 shotgun should NOT be able to hit me with pinpoint accuracy from 500 yards.
Maybe it's me, but I think that an enemy should NOT be able to see me through two walls and a rock.
Maybe it's me, but I think that it shouldn't take seven rounds to head of an enemy from my mounted Browning M2 .50 Cal machine gun to FINALLY kill him.
Maybe it's me, but I think that if I completely take out a guard post I should be able to return to that post 60 seconds later and have it NOT fully occupied by more insurgents.
Maybe it's me, but I think that a game with a full day/night cycle should have the ability of having a flashlight or some sort of night vision.
Maybe it's me, but I think that it should take more than three shots to my vehicle before it starts spewing black smoke. (BTW the ability to shoot tires out would have been nice, aka Crysis.)
I sincerely hope most these issues are fixed with a patch - soon!
9 out of 10? I am speechless. This game doesn't deserve 9. Max 7.
Reason:
The settings is nice and all that. Bells and eyecandy but the game feels somehow hollow.
And damage resistance of the player and the enemies make the gunfights feel extremely idiotic. Since when did mercenaries in T-shirts soak up 3-4x 00 buckshots from less than 10 meters away/5-6x 7.62mm hits to the torso/double headshots before dying.
Seems that this game is dumbed down for console crowd. What has gaming become of? An assortment of brahmin crap laced with radiation and nuka cola. If this trend continues you will see games in the near future, where you only need to put the game in the console, turn power on and the game finishes itself with no player input. Just like a movie.
Skip this game, and save your money for something else
I bought, and installed, the PC version on Vista 64bit.
I can only play the game on medium settings, because any higher and the game refuses to even load the splash screens.
Whether this is a settings limitation or something else, I found the much touted fire system to be a big bag of bollocks.
I tried, on the first mission (I don't think this is really a spoiler) where you have to kill some people to secure your first safe house. I checked the guys were in the long grass, and promptly set fire to it. It traveled about 15 feet, against the direction of the wind (If the way the trees were moving is anything to go by), and went out. For no good reason, it went out. It wasn't that it ran out of burnables - It was a very clear straight line of burned and non-burned in the dry grass.
It's patched, the system is up to date, and the hardware is not slow. Quad core, 2.6ghz, more than enough RAM, 4870's in crossfire, and the game can only run at medium settings? Something's not right, and since I've done minimal (Read: None) buggering about with anything beyond cranking the settings to high, crashing it, and reinstalling - I cannot see how it's even remotely my fault. I've spent somewhere in the region of six hours troubleshooting and sifting through google - To no avail.
Not entirely sure how the game got a 9, the story seems to be a massive bag of rubbish, too. Yeah.. I'm not impressed with this game.
