its all very well saying to build a prototype but once you have an idea how do you even start to program it??

By learning a programming or scripting language, or at least building a workable mod on another engine. Asking someone to cover the basics of that though is a little intimidating and will require serious effort. Mark's articles assume that you've already got a basis in coding or at least seriously looking at developing one.
