I must say I didn't see this game as much of a big deal before I read Joe's preview - neeeeeeeed™! Like Joe says, even if it doesn't turn out to be fantastic, I still want to look at some of the new ideas it's bringing to the table.

Roll on 7th September!

If its anything like Black and white, I'll be a megalomaniac god that plays with the hopes and dreams of my followers. "Oh, you thought it would be fun to collect wood, how does collecting it in outer space sound?! MWhahaha"

O_O

lets just hope its release date is atleast somewhat close to reality..... would suck to see a game with so much potential go the way of DNF.

I'm really looking forward to playing this game. It sounds like there is a lot of new technology and gaming concepts behind the engine.

I wasn't that excited about this game, it looked like another big promise no deliver job. But having read the sheer scope of the thing, and how ridiculously free it seems to be I'm suddenly rather giddy.

I need to play this game, I've been hoping for it's release ever since that quiet announcement at E3 all that time ago and this preview has just reawakened that enthusiasm.

lol, one of the freelancers that does some stuff for bit on the odd occasion is called Spode... I guess I'm more used to typing that than Spore (as I had to update that caption last night when the trailer was released). ;) :o

Nice preview Joe, I'm surpised your race didn't have a Steven King-esque mental disorder, which always seemed to be the sum total of your creative output. (j/k!)

On subject though, in theory this is a truly breath taking game and if they can pull it off, which fingers crossed it looks like they can, it just might be the best God-game since Sim City.

Was nice and happy when i got the email yesterday saying a release date had been confirm. Even happier when hookedonspore.com updated with loads of new info and positively giddy this morning when I got to read bit-techs thoughts and see new screens. Quick Q though, did you take the screens yourself or were they supplied by Maxis?
phuzz 13th February 2008, 10:14 Quote
So what's the DS version like?
CardJoe 13th February 2008, 10:15 Quote
Not as good.

Also, we've decided this is an example of the MOSH genre - Massively Online Singleplayer Hybrid; MOSH.

Lol, how long were you thinking up that one?

They were supplied by Maxis - Joe wasn't allowed to take screens at the event.

About 30 seconds of just trying to work out the genre then Ed decided MOSH was a good acronym and we worked backwards :p

Rest assured that they are representative of the game as we play it though.

Interesting. The development of working procedural design is going to change gaming forever. I was reading about a game in a magazine someone had brought to work that claims to offer something like 500,000 different, procedurally generated, weapons to play with. Even the maps are generated procedurally so while the basic enviroment doesn't change, the interesting bits (structures, enemies, supplies, etc) are different every time you play.

Spore looks amazine, and while it doesn't turn my crank much, I'm really glad they have made this work!

This looks amazing. Just curious as to how much freedom you have to change your creatures evolution. Could you create the lifecycle of the xenomorph from the film alien for instance i.e parasitic facehugger/alien. Also the cultural evolution, can you make them work like an ant colonies "hive mind"(serving the Queen), rather than a more traditional human colony, or do all creatures follow the same basic steps in evolution?

wasn't all that interested in this game (was going to keep an eye on it though) since it seemed like mostly talk. after reading the preview though, now all i want to do is make the races from star wars XD

Personally I'm envisaging something more akin to Attack of The Booby Monsters, but hey, whatever floats your boats...

There's already been talk about steps to prevent this. Users will be able to flag "inappropriate" content and if it gets enough flags it will be removed from the Spore servers.

And about those screens shots, are there any more, because I know a forum that would be ecstatic if they saw more.
