I played the demo yesterday and to me it looks like a 3 year old spacecombat game (cant remember the game.. ah! it was Halo). It is very confusing and chaotic. I dont know what to do either. With the 'old' battlefield 1942, you just jumped into the game and start bashing around. it was understandable easy to get into. And really fun to play. And you could walk around a lot quicker to. Have tried to walk in this game but it takes hoooooouuurs to get somewhere but i dont know where to go or what to do.
I really dont know the whole hype about it. It is just a old looking spaceshooter. sort of early unreal tournament stuff.
<offtopic> COH for RTS really impressed me. I play a mission in 3 to 6 hours. (i'm the defending kinda player) Thats reall bang for the buck converted playtime. It also looks amazing and the sound effects are just awesome. </offtopic>
I didn't think the post I'd finally register here for would be a negative one, but unfortunately it is. I must start by saying, I enjoy every article you guys write, I find them informative, unbiased, and above all, accurate. But this article I find is not.
You can't have played the game too much if you think all the tanks float, or both sides are exactly the same, or it somehow takes place on another planet... The fact is, they're very distinct, and each has it's own characteristics. The PAC for example, arguably have much better technology (being the side that has hover tanks, which are quite fun to drive by the way). Whilst the EU seem to have the older, more brutal technology (Chainguns anyone? :)).
Overall, I think the game brings a breath of fresh air to the Battlefield franchise, a break in the historical and contemporary monotony. The unlocks can do nothing but make an already promising game better. Really is a shame that some people can't see it this way.
The downside of the demo is that a lot of things and abilities you had as default from the start in BF2 you now get first as unlocks, and they're not available in the demo -> the demo probably doesn't represent the game very well. Defillibrator, the abiliy to repair vehicles around you, mines - just to mention a few things.
I'm sure BF2142 will be more fun after a while, with among other things enhanced healing, enhanced sprint which will help when you're without a vehicle, because infantry is, like said above, mowed down to easily. Some bugs - self walking walker, commander map not responding correctly, repair circle fill algorithm faulty and some more bugs, some important, some irritating, hope they'll fix them in a patch soon. Better performance with nicer graphics, but a bland map. Easier to fly, but I miss the boats. Why not some hovercraft speeder boats to use on the water?
Btw, if you have an Audigy card, notice that it's back in the supported list. They apparently misspelt it earlier, and forgot two letters; it's the Audigy LS that's not supported.
Don't miss the new Audigy drivers with OpenAL 1.1 support, released Oct 9.
on BF2 or Bf2142 Do not use dynamic shaders set it to OFF
the game will welcome you with long load times and probly low frame rates if used
with my set up not much of an problem but dynamic i still have off any way for the load times (Less then 10-15 secs per map)
still think its fun to play but not haveing use of any unlocks is not showing what the game can do (anti tank unlock makes the him alot more of an problem for tanks and APCs just One of you been antitank unlock can make apcs move and tanks, walkers hide an little more)
This game is very UT2004 - Onslaught 'esque'. Seems bf2 has really taken a page from the power cores and power nodes present in the game. Point of it is to control a link all the way to the enimies power core to drop its shield at which point you try to destroy it. Very similar at least to this games titan mode. Anyone who has played the game mode before should agree. Seems like a decent enough game. Interesting to see the fixes for the final version. Good point also about the widescreen settings. At this point in computers, it simply must give those options. Hopefully they will be there in the final version. If there is a public outcry about it. ;)
I actually liked the demo a lot :) The graphics are pretty nice, and besides the tedious walking the overal "grandness" of things is great.
The only downside of the game I could think of;
- lack of widescreen resolutions... EA really missed out on this one.
A shame really, since widescreen/highres is getting mainstream.
- 3rd person view
I personally love running/riding around in 3rd person view (like SOCOM).
Comparing it to a game like Crysis is logical, but that's a game that's going to be released in Q1-2007... so we won't see that one for another few months. BF2142 is out now/next week, so it's pretty normal for the game being a bit "less" then Crysis right?
Could someone tell me if the gameplay of BF2142 and Crysis are pretty much the same? I know that all we saw so far are screenies and trailers of the game, but so far the gameplay itself seems a bit similar to BF2142 (apart from the graphics that is).

You're quite right...... but......
Good lord man, you own a 7950GX2!! If you cant wait an extra 10-15secs to load a map why in god's name did you buy the most powerful GPU in the land?
My 7900gt giggles like a little girl at BF2 and BF2142 - max settings (yes including dynamic shaders :)), 4xTSAA, 8xAF and still getting about 45-55fps so I know that thing must be kicking some ass.
Please don't continue with this heresy and let the poor 7950GX2 get to work ;)
Having played it extensively, i have to say i think its good.
Infact id say it may even prove better than battlefield 2 once all the unlocks are there, or atleast it has the potential to be.
In battlefield 2 i felt a player could die way WAY too easily. Now i know some say its realistic that way and requires more skill but i like to remember were playing a game so it has to have some sense of balance or buffer for the player in it atleast to actually get to grips with the battlefield...if you get what i mean.
Here, the addition of the medipacks healing everyone is a great idea, the assault teams can now actually survive longer than a few seconds and go on killing sprees. I myself choose the Engineer the most since he has anti-tank and can take on all comers, but i have gone in killing sprees of about 6 players + (i know its not impressive but it is to me :o ) back to back with quickly taking someone down, healing from a another player, ducking, taking a few shots at any tanks around and hiding and quickly taking any loose players down that are on foot.
So satisfying when your dominating! and with abit of luck and awareness you can survive longer which i love instead of constantly dying easily respawning.
I like that you survive atleast a little bit longer in this.
The environments need work but il still buy it, im becoming good at it slowly which im liking, seeing your name top 3 times on a server is a nice feeling :D
getting into the game within 15 secs is important to get setup before any one els join gets in as it can take upto 2-3 mins before others get to the join button (on 2142 mite not be the same as my comment at the end of the page)
More disk speed, that i have, 4 disks in RAID 0 kicks arse and is Not limited by the chip set {120/mb nf4 or lower}{going to make an new post for that}(2 disks in raid 0 tho will make game joning time be a lot faster)
CPU power is what I do not have; I really want that new Intel CPU that makes better FPS
BF is a lot more CPU limited (any setting on my pc does not make the game play any better or worse)
-----------
what nvidia drivers are you useing
-----------
i have now tested 2142 on max everything after the 2 min optimising shader’s part it loads like its on none candy settings (within 15 secs) that is not the same as BF2 as it used to pause for an little bit
I thought the onslaught mode was pretty nice, the maps are big which makes vehicles necessary, unless you want to get sniped.
I dislike the Titan mode. The Titan is way to small inside and it's shields always went down fast. All in all, Titan mode for me when I played were short games.
They could have made Titan mode a lot better.
Gah... Battlefield after 1942 has become a money machine for EA, and they are twisting every nickel out of it, I agree it looks more like a mod for BF2.. Infact if I recall it correctly, there is a damn good community mod out there for 1942 (Desert Storm) that is way more fun to play than BF is. It has 21. century warfare as it should be when played as a game, not all to realistic.. Only good thing i can find from the later series is the bigger freedom of places to go on foot and some new hardware to kill with.. So far i have played the demo of 2142 for a couple of hours, and i'm not happy at all, there is just too much BF2 in it.. So for now i will stick to Far cry for a FPS game that is stunning to see and loads of fun to play and wait for a better war simulation.. /me wishes i could make the exec's remove their head from their own anal cavity and listen to those who play their games...
Im loving it. I have clocked up 18 hours over the weekend according to xfire. Im on the demo every night until its out. I have it on pre-order and booked friday off so I can play it all day on release day. Its nice to play somehting different compared to the many WWII games like 1942, COD, HDD etc as there are too many of them.
I've been playing the mod ... er... game for a bit now and I have to say I lost about 4 hours the other night and didn't even notice. I was consumed with learning the ins and outs of the game.
Okay... to be true, however, I lost about 10 hours on BF1942 the first day and for months to come- but the game got so inundated by hackers (read: people who were much better than me- and the odd hacker) that it wasn't even fun anymore. There was no team play- very little strategy... and unlike what one guy said earlier... I don't think it'll ever square away... public servers will always be free-for-alls with a few guys who really just want to feel like they are a part of something better. They're the support guys carrying the kit nobody wants... but who play an integral role. The engineers who run around fixing things... and the medic guys who run around and heal where needed.
One thing that concerns me, however- having only played the demo...
The way it is now- I think it's somewhat balanced. Walkers are somewhat feared.. but they can be dealt with. I know when I'm in a walker, people around are going... uh oh- unless they're in a fricken APC- which seems to be so heavily armoured it doesn't have to worry about anything- or a tank, or an engineer...
Okay, so I find they're a bit undervalued. When a walker comes up- people should be running in fear! There are only 2 on the whole freakin map.
It's not suicide to be in a walker now- but in the game itself- there are homing mines and mines and mines and mines and mines and mines... oh and did I mention there are still few (2 tops I think) mechs? I just think by the time you've got a game going on, there'll be so many freakin mines on the map you won't be able to move 10 feet. I think that's stupid- but then who am I?
Oh, and don't tell anyone- but I think the recon guys in the demo are hammered. (I know, I know... unlocks will help stabilize them).
I've only ever played titan mode... and to be true- with the exception of the odd thing I don't like (okay, if I'm critically injured- don't tell me I'm rejoining the battle in 5 seconds, and then make me wait another 10 seconds when someone doesn't come and save me... which I don't think has ever happened to me anyway).
There are some really good players in there... I'm jealous of their l33tness... but... as many things as I don't like about the game... I went running up underneath a mech while the top gunner was trying to whack me... and a couple other guys in a nearby APC were shooting at me... and someone was giving me cover fire from a nearby rail gun... and I was trying to aim at the little vent areas underneath while the driver attempted to stomp on me...
That was just a wee bit exciting- put a rocket right in there and the mech fell apart... and I ran off (and got killed promptly). That was worth it... it really, really was worth it. Fun... yeah, we're allowed to admit it every now and then.
My only problem with the entire BF series is the massive dependence on vehicles. Literally, if you don't have a vehicle, your dead. Don't even try to play. Just wait for a vehicle to spawn. Its very annoying at times when you have to walk for 5 minutes to get to some spot, just to get sniped before coming into range of anyone. I remember playing CoD UO and how if I was in a tank, yay, footsoldiers beware, but when I was on the ground, tanks beware. It was balanced, and if you weren't skilled with your vehicle (or lack of) then you were in serious trouble. It made it a lot more fun. Hopefully EA will see that someday and make some changes.

Quite a few maps are close quarters this time. To make things even more pleasant, certain maps have "square curbs" around some of the cap points to insure there won't be any vehicle's doing the "drive by flagging" anymore.

This started happening to me lately. If you go into MyDocuments/ and delete the "Battlefield2142demo" folder it should start up fine.
I think something in the profiles is a bit twitchy at the mo and it must get corrupted easily.
