Good article. Now I just want to PLAY the level :(

The NVIDIA screen shot seems to have just a touch more contrast and detail in the distance. If you look at the rocks on the right side of the screen in the distance it is noticable there. Granted, I could only see that by flipping back and forth between the pictures. In-game, or even side by side play, probably there won't be any real difference. Good job Valve on that!

You're such a tease! Video is downloading now so I shall see what I"ll be missing out on. I still want to stab you with a spork for teasing us with DoD:S. :p

Watching the video now...looks amazing. You should put a big warning on there though that it's extremely loud! Even with the volume at 1/4 it nearly scared the crap out of me.

BTW, what program was used to record that?
RotoSequence 21st September 2005, 16:28 Quote
Thanks for that warning Bloodcar; I am downloading it (at school) as we speak, so Im not going to scare people with loud HL2ness, and avoid getting in trouble ;)

:EDIT: Looks nice, but the screenshots do it more justice than the video does ;)

So we are lucky then!

I like the idea of the camera adjusting to the light, it will give more of a realistic feel where you'll probably have to wait a few seconds beofre you start shooting at someone whos in the light.

As for the last two pictures, is it just me or does the screenie with the ATI card look a little bit flatter than the nVidia? Perhaps its to due with the power of the graphics card, the 7800GTX certainly seems nearly twice as good as the X850XT!

I have a question, is the sunlight in the game in a static place? If so would this enable us to know which way is North and South without using a compass?

Downloading vid now :)
The_Pope 21st September 2005, 16:51 Quote
Crikey - sorry about the loudness - didn't realise it was a problem.

Yes, afaik the sun is static. It's the primary lightsource for the level.

Ooooooooh.... pretty. I think it's time for an upgrade!
Muunsyr 21st September 2005, 17:12 Quote
I can't wait to upgrade, there is so much to do and see. Oh the world would be so much prettier in HDR. Err...it is you say...but not like in HL2: The Lost Coast...but look at it!
kye 21st September 2005, 17:22 Quote
a 6800 vanilla card in the benchmark would of been pretty amazing to show the budget gamers how it will run.

That would have been nice.

I JUST WANT TO PLAY ALREADY!!!!!

Wow the video was pretty sweet. Shame I'm in the under 5fps category. Might be time for upgrades.
Highland3r 21st September 2005, 20:36 Quote
mmmm Can't wait to play this, looks well nice :D Those screenies are amazing, assuming even with the GTX they werent playable @ 1600*1200 with high aa/af enabled? Or were multilpe cards used ;)
Firehed 21st September 2005, 21:12 Quote
I just wanna know if I can play 1600x1200 0xAA/AF instead of your preferred 1024 2/8. Probably not too well... oh well. I'm still glad I put my money towards dual-core instead of going from a 6800GT (comeon, someone knows they want one, my second is for sale) to 7800GT.

On the 2 comparison shots between Nvidia & ATI, Whats going on with the "A" In health, and the "A" and "O" in "ammo"???

Yeah, that's a weird one that.

This is the sorta stuff that makes me glad I got such a radiculously specced PC :)

Woops! That's right, ATi has just been caught in some HDR-ish font cheating :D :D

Hahaha. Y'all gots too much time on yo' hands.

Leave it to our forums to dissect that image until we DO find a fault. ;)

As minor as it is, HEY ATI, FIX YOUR FONT RENDERINGS. Just cause you finally caught up on 3d doesn't mean that you're allowed to break the 2d for it. :)
Firehed 22nd September 2005, 00:14 Quote
Man that PC is insane in your sig. Umm... how do you USE 2x 2405FPWs? Aside from needing an ungodly huge desk, you can't run multimonitors with SLI enabled (unless I've really missed something and should give up trying to sell my second 6800GT and put it back in)

Yeah, those letters on the right (ATI?) screenshot are definately wierd. Doesn't change the fact that you can almost read the information on the back of the revolver bullets...
fellix_bg 22nd September 2005, 00:39 Quote
And now something serious, even boring:

7800:

...look at the ground texture - any shimmering, more on one and less on the other?!

Hi everyone.

Ooh look, my first post on Bit-Tech....and why? ->

As for CrossFire, we'll tell you on Monday when we publish that article.

1. Does this mean CrossFire is released on Monday?
2. Does this mean the NDA from ATI expires on Monday?
3. Is there another surreptitious reason for waiting until Monday to release the details?
4. Can I wait for Monday?

Guess you guys were too busy examining the images or watching the video, or just plainly don't care about CrossFire to even notice that bit in the article!

Doing a good job Bit-Tech.

Hehe :) First things first...Welcome to the forums, mysterae! :D

Second...I don't think crossfire comes out on monday. ATI have paper-launched it a long time ago, and I'm doubtful it's ready yet. Since they've paper-launched it, they *technically* shouldn't have any allowed NDA on it, but I'm pretty sure that's what's unfolding...probably a board partner that will allow some specs to finally be tested. I hope so, because this biased article stuff I'm reading everywhere is driving me nuts.

Though I'll be glad to finally see a non-biased review from our dynamic duo of Rich and/or Tim, I'm sadly not holding out much hope for CF to be able to top SLI...at this point, I question whether it can even compete. It's been so long in the coming that I honestly don't think it's going to rival any of NVidia's newer hardware.

And I'm sure you can wait til monday. :)

Offtopic kinda:

Woot this newstory reached Digg.com main page at about 12:15AM EST US
I found about it while I tried to post a news story and it said that one was already present. Mr. Pope has posted it first. =)
Daamn I am surprised how bit tech got this video/info so early.

Great job guys!
The_Pope 22nd September 2005, 08:46 Quote
The cool thing about Digg is that it's user driven - sites can't spam it with useless crap because nobody would vote for it. Occasionally I drop a link in there to just say "Hey guys - we think this is pretty cool, so if you want to share it with everyone else, give it a digg" and the cream rises to the top.

We got this for two reasons really: Valve were kind enough to invite me to visit their office in Seattle, and I was crazy enough to endure a 40+ hour round trip in order to attend the briefing.

We didn't "get" this video - I made it myself. It is a bit-tech original production, which is why you won't see it anywhere else. All the screenshots were also taken by us, and the benchmarks run in-house.

I'm keen for some feedback on the video actually - is it something you'd like to see more of? Or do you normally try and avoid videos like this so as to not spoil the first-play experience when the game comes out. As you can imagine, a production like that isn't thrown together in 5 minutes, so is it worth us spending the time on making more?

For example, would you like to see a Day of Defeat: Source video to decide whether to shell out 20 bucks for it on Monday?
bloodcar 22nd September 2005, 09:01 Quote
I'd love to see a DoD:S. But I'm not shelling out $20 for it....I bought it with HL2! :D
