I'm about to get HL2 this week by joining steam. I'm a bit late on the uptake on this game due to having a year where I worked away from home and didnt have b/band.
All this hype over 15 minutes? Well, woot anyways. Why else have top end hardware if I can't use it for great textures and HDR rendering? I just hope that if this is successful that they have high-res textures in future games or even remakes of current games with the same (high-res texture pack or something).
You didn't mention if HL2/CS:S would get HDR added in in the future though...
Looks good, although I'm a bit miffed at the 15 minutes. I wasn't expecting much, but it was certantly more than 15 minutes. I tend to take games this pretty slow and marvel at the environments, so I'll probably take an hour :D
ouch, hurts my eyes to look at it. im glad real life doesnt look like that. all fuzzy and over bright and you try to focus but cant because its a static image on the screen.
Keep in mind that screenshots represent a second in time, like a picture. The point of HDR means that as you move, as the lightsources move, etc...the effect is going to appear, then dissipate properly. :) Kinda neat, actually, when you think about it.
As for Lost Coast, I'm quite sure at this point in time that it's all one big mass hallucination. It's kinda like the phantom console..."It'll be here someday...it's just around the corner..."
Valve have a gold crowbar in their lobby?! Wow, I'm jealous!
I hope HDR is all it's cracked up to be. I'm going to enjoy the new level, but I also hope it lasts more than the 10-15 minutes it took me to complete each level of Half-Life 2!
Arf, read the post just above mine...15 minutes...ahh well, it's at the top end of my "wow short level" scale!
Check out the pic of Gabe playing DoD. Take note of the boxes of games on his desk, now is that a copy of what I think it is underneath Counter Strike?
Do we know when it will be available? I didn't see it in the article but I may have missed it.
P2D - I wasn't dissapointed by HL2, even with all the hype. It didn't change my life or anything but I really enjoyed playing it through, and to see graphics like that running on my mediocre computer was pretty cool. Weren't you too impressed then?
i'm looking forward to this regardless of how long it takes to play through it, but i'll be honest, i had always thought that HDR required Share Model 3.0, so being an ATi card owner im stoked that i can play it with SM2.0 :)

There are a few different types of HDR - the method that I think Valve are using is a fixed range 16-bit integer, rather than a 16-bit floating point (potentially unlimited range of colour values).
Current ATI hardware cannot do a 16-bit floating point blend, but I understand that R520 will be able to do this.

You can also have a sneaky peek at the new Day of Defeat HUD in the picture of Newell playing it

I cant wait till i can actually run HDR on my machine.
I hope that HDR will be enabled for HL2.

the short answer to that is, "it won't ever." The long answer is "nobody knows." The official answer is "soon." :)
I swear, I think this level is actually just a series of images that we're meant to print out and use as a flip-book. :)
And he's using a Mac LCD too...
Welcome to bit-tech ;)
