A skeleton, AI and some vampire chick before Kane???!!!!!! Alex no2 for sure but she ain't got nothing on Kane. Maybe if she was waaaaaay fitter and didn't prattle on and on with condescending attitude whilst I throw barrels to DOg. Yea, why isn't Dog listed, he's well kewl.
Come on guys, I iz shocked, who decided on this??????
Kane should be higher up and are these characters only allowed to be PC based? Otherwise there is a whole host of other contenders such as Dr. Robotnik, Slippy Toad from Star Fox and even the Dog from Duck Hunt

We did look for Computer Game characters rather than Video Game characters, yes. Maybe annother article in the future on the merits of Tails and Ashley for RE4...
BARNEY!!! we all love Barney! he's been far more helpful than alyx ever was and i was always sad when i had to leave him behind in black mesa!
and yeh, you're totally right about Jeanette. Took a bit of time for me to realise she was nutz but when it hit it was awesome revalation. She'd be like a threesome but with just one other person.
agree with the comment by coza, this is a very pc based list, though struggling to think of console NPCs. prefer leon srom lylat wars to slippy though. slippy's a dick.
Ragnaros and Major Domo "TOO SOON" will probably be up there for alot of people... (then again wow is probably 50% people who never saw this NPC these days.. :<)
Or what about all the classic Lucas Arts adventure games .. Broken Sword, Full Throttle, DOtT!

I *really* wanted to, but to be honest I felt that they could have dominated the list if I'd let them and then the whole thing would have been *my* top ten. Besides, how do you even rate those guys? They are all so excellent!

But, Barney isn't really an NPC, lest we forget Blue Shift, where you get to look through the eyes of Barney as he escapes Black Mesa.
You should call this " Bit-Tech staff Top 10 Computer Game NPCs" since this was your personal choices guys.
If you wanted this to be a bit more general, you should have done a poll maybe, just my humble opinion xD

hmmm...very valid point. and unfortunately blue shift was a bit poo. so agreed there, Barney does not make the top 10. he still owes us a beer though!
Three important games are missing from this list, I think:
1. Star Wars: KOTOR. Darth Malek was one of the best villains ever, and HK-47 was patently hilarious.
2. Max Payne 2. Mona was a superb supporting character, well presented, and whose relationship with Max is fabulously complex. Not to mention the pain or elation of the two possible game endings.
3. Mass Effect. Saren was a very well written antagonist - a hero/villain who bit off more than he could chew, and had to see things through to the bitter end.

Have to say that Jeanette would have been my number one, but I did spend far too long playing that game.
Also glad to see Deux Ex getting its kudos. Ahh, the memories...
However, you missed one - Barney! OK, so Half-Life is already in there, but how can you miss the fatman?
I was a bit nervous that she wasn't going to get #1 but glad to see she prevailed :)

P'ah! If we're going to have a security guard then I'd go for Otis from Opposing Force instead.

This means you need to go play more games!

He should be at least No 2, if not No 1.
The ultimate character.
:p

"Hey Gordon, about that beer I...you know what? Nevermind. I highly doubt there's going to be a relaxing pub-based area at the end of all this..."

But the cake was real! The Companion Cube got some, but I didn't, because of my mistrust and rebellion. Makes me sad.
