If I get my job I'll be starting my training on release day :'(

I had heard of this for a while now, and yet, showed no particular interest, however, with this review, i'm a changed mind, looks like it could be a blast, haha.
Cheers Joe for a good read up.

This one will definitely land in my collection. :D

Hmm... anyone remember Sim Earth?
Quote Grizby 15th February 2008, 00:17
I noticed that you pointed out that the model starts as a blob with a spine... Does that mean we can't make Invertebrates? Would my dream of making those silly squishy Jellyfish Aliens from Metal Slug be crushed forever? No Giant Flesh Eating Demon Squids? ... No floating heads of Cthulhu?

Sim Earth was awesome! My personal favorite is still Sim Ant. Giant Spiders with Lasers! Can't go wrong with that :D

I think invertebrates are out yeah - blobs would be too hard to animate it seems. You can of course make them blob shapes and reduce the spine however you want though - I saw one where the body formed a O shape which was fun.

A question for the article's author:

In all the screenshots I've seen of Spore, I've never seen any hair and just a few feathers. When you were playing the game, did you notice options for mammalian and avian creatures, or are we stuck with just reptiles (that are only allowed features on their wings)? Thanks

I'm sure I saw a hairy thing in a screenshot once...

I'm not sure about realistic puffy hair and feathers, but you can definitely apply textures and skin details to the animals that would make them look that way.

I'm glad to hear they have furry and feathery textures. Makes me wonder why those never made it into any of the screen shots. All I've seen are either smooth or scaly. And will, you may be right, but I spent an hour searching collections of Spore screenshots, and I couldn't find anything that wasn't smooth or scaly (I'm not counting wings, tail feathers, etc since I'm talking about whole-creature texture).

Still kinda wish they'd actual model feathers and fur. Textured lion's manes, for example, are gonna suck. I guess now they have their first expansion pack:
Spore 2: Extra Fluffy
:P

I thought that the older spore previews, that AFAIK had slightly better graphics, allowed for really hairy monsters inc style creatures. I think the graphics have been scaled down a bit though, or it might be my memory playing tricks on me.

Do you think they'll market the creature creation software separately, for programs like Maya or Flame? Having stock models of creatures would make my life a lot easier.
Quote CardJoe 19th February 2008, 07:42
Well, the creature creation stuff is going to be available before the game in some form. I also spoke to EA and exporting to Maya and so on is one of the extra tools they are looking at adding in later expansion packs.

They didn't hint as to when they would release it by any chance? >.>

Afraid not.
