nice work Joe, looks to be some fun although i dont know how much i'll be playing it online to be honest, doesnt strike me as bringing something new, like you said, so i probably wont give online much time imo. Bit worried about how this might rape my system though, still, give it something to do.
I played the demo using Medium settings and it was fine, I played the same level in the full game last night on Medium and it was dreadful. What on earth have Crytek done between putting out the demo and getting the full version in my hands? I'm probably going to have to drop down to Low just to be able to have people talk and have their movements sync up.
So in other words, a graphically beautiful Far Cry? Exactly what everyone was expecting then. Great review, though I doubt I'll be picking this up any time soon, my PC just isn't good enough to give it its due. You're right though, I'm betting by the time most people can cope with the particularly intense effects, the more mundane parts of the graphical engine will begin to make it show its age. And by then, a much better engine will have been released with totally unique texturing or something. :)
Brilliant review thankyou. Told me everything i needed to know. So much so that i decided to go into town earlier because i wanted it today!! Picked it up in HMV for a very resonable £27.95. I know i could of saved a few quid by getting @play.com etc but that would mean waiting for delivery!! :)
Anyway i'm just going to grab some lunch them install it but i need a quick question answering if anyone can. As i don't have a dx10 card yet, shall i install on vista or xp?
I'm hoping i can turn a few of the settings to high.
What a fantastic week for PC shooters. First Gears, then CoD4, then this. :) Anyone else remember a week with 3 AAA titles? I can't!

It's a fun game. It was obviously designed to be run at max on the next generation of hardware... kinda like Far Cry. There's a lot of variety in there (especially thanks to the editor) but I rarely find the story of a game keeps dragging me back, unless it's an RPG.
Great review and I'm still quite undecided whether or not to get it as it just doesn't feel right to run this game on anything else than max details. ;)
Anyways, on the "I-just-can't-capture-the-particles-hittin'-the-ground-cat-reflex" issue: Why not use Fraps or something similar, take some video editing tool, skip through frame after frame and pick the best match? Just an idea though...
Well i'm having to pretty much run everything on medium to keep a nice smooth framerate @ 1440x900. And it certainly does not look that good on medium. One to keep for future hardware that's for sure:)
That was on XP with cat 7.10 btw, i'm going to try it on vista now.
Crytek has done a smart work. The textures quality are the same for some critical parts, like faces, cloth, weapon, no matter you set the option to low or very high. The most noticable texture differences are the quality of leaves and ground.
Great review as always, Joe.
It's fantastic to see a review that sidesteps the hype and delivers an honest opinion on the game by being neither overly positive nor overly negative - Exactly what I've come to expect from Joe's reviews and bit-tech in general.
I'll admit that the review wouldn't have had much bearing on my decision to buy the game or not, as the demo was all the convincing I needed, but it's nice to see an educated, knowledgeable opinion on it all the same.
Probably missed it, but are there any performance benchmarks around? I'm a bit curious as to what my MBP can make of this thing (C2D 2.2, 2GB, 8600M GT 128MB) so I don't waste my time trying to free up the hard drive space.
In any case, a great review. Hopefully the few oddities will get patched; regardless, I look forward to giving it a spin in the near future.

Actually, I think this is slightly scripted. You know that video where the tyres are shot out and the car rolls.... Well, that's what the car is trying to do when it pitch poles onto its nose like you mentioned. Unless you're going straight on flat ground it doesn't work. I've often found the car trying to roll over dramatically when a tyre gets shot out but I know how to counteract so it just ends up slowly flopping onto its side as if there was a major clipping issue and then rolling back onto it's wheels. Basically, I'm not sure its a physics issue, more of a feature they showed in a video not really being in the game so they decided to bodge it together. It's a shame really, because if you chuck a nade under a car it does exactly what I think they are trying to do.

Yep - that's acceptable. But I'm talking about just driving without being shot at...
i know i've already commented, but i just played the full version and its awesome, played on a 3.54mhzconroe with 4gigs of ram and a 2900xt, full setting and x4 aa, will try x8aa later but have to wash the car before it gets dark. It ran perfectly and they even kept the bubbles from far cry, awesome. so much attention to detail its great, coming out of water, the run of water created as the visor clears itself is awesome, just like a snorklying mask does in real life, nice work crytec. Controls are handy but a touch different with new buttons being used as there are more features, i think i read that the suit can be more trouble than its worth or soemthing in the review, but its awesome i think, easy to use and great for moving into a stronger position to attack 20 koreans from.

Actually another point it gets weird is when you try to drive over a knocked over tree. Even when a hummer or tank even should be able to scramble over it just gets stuck.

Just like in Hot Shots, but without the bow.
Excellent review Joe.

Should will be while, on the last page?
Anyway great article, I was lazy and only ordered the game last night so I will have to wait a day or two to play :(
Low settings just won't do the game justice.
