IMHO, difficult learning curve is a good thing.. The game is nice and HARD!!
what about "quick-save"..? I don't see an option, need to experiment with F5 or F6... but nothing in the STALK-reference quick-keys about qs...
an oversight on a game in development years... For-Shame!!

look in the control section of the options screen :p
took me a couple of goes to shoot my way through the military guys on the train embankment, cos they shot some other stalker first and i pinched his AK :D
the game is quite infuriating at the beginning because you only have access to the really ****** guns
later on you get good guns that are actually vaguely accurate :p
I was going to add that... they're not listed in the manual or in the keyboard setup as far as I could see. Now that I know about QS/QL I use them constantly... you really need to!
I did have one strange occurrence when reloading a quick save... on the mission to kill the tower sniper at the Freedom base.
I killed him and headed back to Skull to claim my reward. He then told me to kill the other 3 snipers while they blew up the wall and attacked. So I went off to do that, and then headed over to kill the leader. Unfortunately in the middle of the fire-fight Skull got shot and I had to give him a first aid kit. This must've messed up the scripting as I could not complete the mission, and Skull forgot I was actually doing one for him. So I reloaded my last (quick) save.
It was perfectly normal when I saved it (just before killing the first sniper), but when I reloaded, everyone was running around on high alert (with their guns out), and as I ran back to Skull for my reward, Freedom bandits were heading that way too for a battle at the farm. The first time I tried it the battle was already under way and Skull seemed to forget I was on a mission for him (again!), so I had to reload and try again and although the bandits were still heading that way I had to run past them as fast as I could to get to Skull before they did. Very odd! I then was able to complete the rest of the mission - making sure Skull did not die this time!
Other than that... and the odd pauses I've started to get while running along (presumably when my [getting crappier by the second] PC has to draw the stuff in the distance) I am absolutely loving this game and having the bejesus scared out of me while something attacks me in the dark. ;)
Sounds like a real fun game. My Special Edition just arrived today (ye thanks Play, I only pre-ordered it in May 06!! :( ), so I'll be firing it up and seeing what's what

Apparently it's a bug with vista and will need a patch .. hence just done a dual booted to xp x64.

happens to me too. 3800+X2 2gb, 7800GTX. med, 1200x1600.
I thought it happened when it started spawning random enemies (dogs, wolves, raiders) around you. stupid "endless streams o' bandits" i'm running low on 9x19.
and how do you kill that brain-melting demon in the sewer beneath the military base exit???
my game seems to just repeat the script where he shoots his thing, then the camera zooms in on him. over and over. impossible for me to get a shot off w'/out getting my brain bled out me ears.
I seem to have it running nice, X1950 pro, X2 4400+,High, 1440x900. fraps says it doing mid to high 30 fps, but it feels much smoother than that.
I'm impressed with the game, the atmosphere is fantastic, after surviving the first night and some close encounters with a monster or two in some dark basements it was a relief to see the sunrise in the morning, I could almost feel the warmth on my face.
I think my adivce to those who are playing the early part of the game and may be getting fed up or frustrated would be to persevere. It gets better and better as you progress and find better weapons. By the time you reach the area around the 100 Rads Bar it's pretty damn good, and the tasks to do become a bit more varied.
There is a guy in the 100 Rads Bar that sells information who said he had info on the brain monster thing. I didn't buy that info off him, but i guess that is a place to start if you are getting stuck there.

Installed this last night and it seems quite good. Although I don't really have the time to play it atm (seems like the type of game where you need to put in some serious time).
I have one little niggle though - the keyboard seems kind of unresponsive. By that, I mean I can press the 'W' key, but the character won't walk immediately - there seems to be a delay of about half a second (same goes for letting go of the key - it'll keep moving for a half second, then stop). Anyone else get this?
Other than that it's running ok on my lappy, although I probably need to tweak the settings some more (going on what you said in the review, I should be able to run at 1920*1200 - assuming the Go 7900GTX is not too far behind a desktop 7900GTX? But then, 2.2Ghz C2D and 2GB of RAM should help...)

i hid in the corridor outside for a second to recharge my sprint bar, equipped bullpup rifle thingy then zoomed up to him
he got like one brain zap in then i just unloaded in his face and he died
easy peasy :)

Wheres the secret tunnel? I'm right at the end of the hallway and I cant climb the latter because its broken off yet I can't see it and I can't go any futher
The first patch was released yesterday (27/03), bringing the version up to 1.0001, but after applying it you can no longer use your previous saves. So be warned. :)
Here are the links if you really need to install it: US Only World Wide
Thats a shame, i was just getting into my stride with this game, but looking at the bug fixes it's probably best updating now and loosing about 8 hours of gameplay rather than getting stuck with some annoying bug 20 hours in.
I guess thats what i get for buying a game on launch day and just rushing right in and playing it.... :(
Ah well, i guess i'd better update and start the killing all over again.... :D now where's my AK....
Also a nice tip is to add -nointro to the end of the filename in the shortcut for the game to skip the annoying movies that play before the main menu. :)

for-shame..
patches are to be expected.. 67 listed bugs plus various-issues..repaired in 1.0001.. Great, but to have to start the game all-over IMHO-- a joke, a bad joke.. (BS) is what I really mean..
as luck would have it, I am not "that far in", so I will just re-kill some bandits.
PS:
from within the STALK main screen:
options-- then
game-- then
game updates (click)
"no new patches available now" (this was before downloading and installing stkus10001.exe)..
Thus, there "game updates" does not work--
once again for-shame..
Disappointing.. Perhaps this is way we can purchase & consume Vodka in the game.. After that patch, Vodka does help..!
