I totally agree, the Amiga spawned a heck of a lot of very cool, very original games. I must have had about 1000 disks-worth of games, utilities and demos for my A1200 before it ended up sharing space with spiders. Unfortunately, they all got chucked when I moved :(
I've been tempted to boot it up sometime, just to see if it still works. It had a 3.5" 1.6GB drive in it, which died of death before I gave up and went PC bound.
Turrican 2 was amazing, particularly the spaceship navigation level.. man, that was mad when it sped up! Gods was also a good platformer, as was Putty. They could stand to be remade in some way.
I say: Zack mc crack'n! should be remastered and all other classic adventure games also.. remember space quest? It was just damn funny compared to what you see now. Infact there are no adventures games at all nowadays. Its all fps and online rpgs.
Although i must say that i spend a couple of night hours playing Halflife TFC Puzzle mod addons where all of us where rofling the floor for hours and hours... Its was so happy happy joy joy. aaah i miss those days tears from laughter.

A cookie for anyone who knows how to make them work
Syndicate wars is by far the hardest dos game to get working in XP. there are three ways i got it working with 640x480 (dos box doesn't work 640x480).
1.
download VDMS and install it
download DOS32a and delete the DOS4GW in the syndicate wars directory and rename DOS32 a to it.
edit play.bat to look this this
@setsound
@main /w /g
while this works it does randomly crash, the next two ways stop the crashing but depending on what sound card you have one is better then the other.
2.
install VMware
create a win 98 Vm
install VMware tools
install syndicate wars
install a dos mouse drive (google)
replace the DOS$GW with DOS32a
install DOS sound card drivers, this is the big let down with MVware it jsut passes through you current sound card, dos driver for a NF4 board any one?
edit play.bat to look this this
@setsound
@main /w /g
F8 at start, select command prompt only, install your mouse driver most likely MSmouse.exe
bobs your uncle but under this i couldn't get sound working so my final way is to use virtual PC 2004 or 2007 which are free. the good thing about these is that they emulate a sound blaster 16 for you unlike VMware .
3.
install VPC
create a win 98 Vm
install VPCtools
install syndicate wars
install a dos mouse drive (google)
replace the DOS$GW with DOS32a
edit play.bat to look this this
@setsound
@main /w /g
F8 at start, select command prompt only, install your mouse driver most likely MSmouse.exe
with this one you dont even have to worry about about install the SB16 DOS drivers it just seems to work and i have never had 1 crash.
ps i join these forums just to tell you this...
cheers
edit: you have to do the @setsound bit because for some reason syndicate wars sound doesn't work to initialize unless its run first
For joining up just to post that then going into such detail I think you deserve a really big cookie. (though with Mister_Tad having that whole bunny thing going on don't ask for raisins)

Carmageddon Remastered...
My thoughts exactly, did you ever play it using glide and a 3dfx card. It looked half decent then.
dont think that fallout would need new gfx and engine, the looks it had was a big part of the game, i just loved it. ive played all the parts quite several times and i still do every now and then and i have never thought it would need an improvement. maybe new cinematics would be nice but thats all. would be much more awesome if someone bought the unfinished fallout3 from those assholes and made finished it.
Hmm.... I remember fondly all the C64 days and the RPGs that used to take up all my time...
Some of the stuff I would love to see re-done without whoring the original content...
Bard's Tale Series
Wasteland
Maniac Mansion
Zak McKrakken
Ultima 7 & 8
I don't believe anyone has touched any of the pseudo flightsim type games in a long time... At least that didn't require reading a full set of Flight Manuals, etc... I remember having fun playing stuff like...
Afterburner
F22 Raptor?? (might have been on my Amiga, but it was just fun.)
Tie Fighter
Freespace 2 (I still can't believe how awesome this game was)...
Descent
Then there are the other golden oldies that I think are on everyone's list...
SimCity
Warcraft 2
Starcraft
Command & Conquer
Leisure Suit Larry
Space Quest
Kings Quest
There are probably a couple more that are eluding me at the moment... What I find amazing though is that throughout this entire thread there are many many repeats... But at the same time, despite the hundreds and thousands of games released over the last 2 or so decades, there are still probably less than 100 games that actually hold any long term value / replayability to people...
one game that is an extremely good example in the spirit of the article is the Freespace 2 Source Code Project.
this game is actually directly related to descent, made by volition after the breakup of interplay and then open sourced when volition collapsed.
the original game was loads of fun but once the SCP got ahold of it it became something else. the graphics are some of the most amazing ones I have ever seen in a space combat sim and are capable of pusing my 7600GS to its limits; but underneath its the same game that I used to love playing back when it was first released.
for those interested in the timeline
Descent
Descent 2
Descent 3
Descent: Freespace
interplay breaks up
Volition is formed
Freespace 2
Volition goes belly-up and Freespace 2 is open-sourced.
this game is the definitive proof that games can be given new lives (and more obsessive fans) with a simple coat of paint.
Just thought of another couple that I'd love to see remastered:
Dungeonmaster & DungeonmasterII.
Oh the hours I spent constructing complicated underground fortresses, killing hero's, taking over compeating lairs, and generally sowing the seeds of carnage & destruction upon the land. You know, being evil. Happy days. :D
Some of the games I would like to see get a remake or a sequel:
Ultima VII
Kings Quest (any from the series or a sequel -I think KQ IV was my favorite)
X-Wing
The Incredible Machine (gotta love a game named after you, "TIM"!)
Battle Chess
Myst
Zork
Baldur's Gate I/II
Total Annihilation
Majesty
Lemmings
I would list Command and Conquer.. but since the new sequel is supposed to be going back to its roots, hopefully we'll get a "remake".
Dungeon Keeper... Dungeon keeper 2 sucked really bad... they tried to hard... Bullfrog outta business... :(
Hmmm if orignal half-life was remade using the source enegine, it would be so much better... all the rendering of everything....
hmmm platform games like jazz jackrabbit , commander keen , Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure , any old 3Drealms games , Doom 1&2 (a game with no story line !!!), etc. i grew up on those games XD
hmm lemmings would be good as long as they keep it platform.. 3D lemmings sucked

also .. if your a movie / video game producer.. email me and ill share my idea for a movie/video game with story board within the star craft world..

how can i forget that, it was along with the likes of diablo, half life, cs generation... ahh those days were good! And I want all those games to be remastered (half life one is being remade, the storyline I mean, and I cannot wait to play it!)
Fallout and starcraft, fallout more than anything else though. Bring the graphics up to company of heroes standards and give a little widescreen support to both of them and I would be happy. And if fallout 2 was properly finished up it would be even better.
Just cant wait for fallout 3 to get started, as long as bethesda dosent F*** it all up. One of the greatest things about fallout 1&2 is how violent and funny it was all at the same time. The huboligists really crack me up. :D
I agree that an Ultima VII remake would be awesome....but there's already something out there that's darn close! An Ultima V remake called Lazarus, done "in the style" of Ultima VII (play it and you'll see what I mean). It's a total conversion mod done with the Dungeon Siege engine. If the idea of a reborn Ultima VII appeals to you, you'll probably want to check this out. ;)

How about it, eh? Just think of it - same mechanics and games play, but dress it up in Eve Online graphics. No mucking about with the basic premis. Trade, fight, dabble with some constructive raids on other shipping (What officer? Me? A Pirate... Perish the thought, me harty...) All the while working toward becoming Elite.
I played lot of ELITE (BBC Micro tape version) and the current game that keeps closest to the spirit is probably X3.
