Who cares about that, that rain looks awesome.

Yeah I agree they have done a great job. T

o take the source engine and make it DX10 will be a complete waste of time. Might as well start over again and make a multi threaded, DX10, ram hugging and Hybrid HD loving engine from scratch.

No dates for when this update will hit Steam then? Just sometime before the beginning of next year?

I've got to say, that rain looks fantastic (from what I can make out). Although it's bloody typical - I bought a dual core laptop a couple of weeks ago, and have only just started playing Episode 1. I'm wondering if I should put off playing until this update is released as I've had to knock down the GFX settings slightly in order to get a smooth framerate (whereas with HL2 I could run everything on max).

can we download that technological demo somewhere ??
Quote Emon 2nd November 2006, 09:35
Alan Wake on four cores, THAT was awesome. This is cool too, though.

Very Very interesting ! Congrats for visiting Valve !! Small spelling errors though : page 2 : , "it's obviously obsolete"

I love it ! Sady I own only a Dual Core machine : Yonah T2500 2 ghz, and my graphics card is crappy (x1400 128MB + 128 shared)
Quote Skill3d 2nd November 2006, 10:17

I'm making this assumption based on the last couple of times we've been to Valve - the demo we've got is not for public consumption. It's an unreleased build of the Source engine that we're not allowed to distribute. You should see it become a reality soon enough though. :)

Yeah and bit released it on youtube for millions to watch.... :?

No DX10 news. Thats a real shame. I really wanted to know what the nextgen cards where doing. And Valve opinion on that topic. Get your lazy butts off the chair and go visit valve again :D

One the of the best articles I have ever read on bit-tech, fascinating use of technology and the rain looks unbelievable. I can only imagine what HL3 will look like.

Great work guys!

We didn't release the build, we released a video of the build running. That's perfectly fine and we've done it with Lost Coast, and with the Cinematics effects.
Quote Krikkit 2nd November 2006, 11:40
Great article, so's the QX6700 article too btw.

One big question though, how long until K8L? "Next year" - Q2-3?

It would be really nice if you would release some high-res stuff.

The YouTube videos are just fuzzy, everything looks "better" when it is all fuzzy because your imagination fills in what your eyes can't see.

Yeah, the issue is Wil's upload in the hotel he's in sucks. We've got plenty of bandwidth to host that sort of thing, maybe we'll add some later when Wil gets back here. ;)

Fantastic! And hats off to Valve for getting the Source engine to go Dual Core. Will switching to Dual Core harm the Single Core users?

I'd hazard a guess that Valve will say that it'll "provide benefits for dual-core/quad-core users" rather than "single core users are going to suffer". :)

Do you work for Valve? :) :D
Quote Veles 2nd November 2006, 12:47
I want a quad core now, gonna wait till end(ish) of next year to see how all the various things measure up.
Quote Marquee 2nd November 2006, 12:56
Good dam if my single core computer can't pwn in Source no more, its going to cause me and allot of other gamers to switch to dual core. There is nothing wrong with that but trust me the old gamers wont switch with out a fight.

Nah, I've just worked on the other side of the game for long enough to know how PR responses work. :p
Quote DeX 2nd November 2006, 13:17
The rain looks pretty crap to me. Maybe it would look better for real. It's not as if they're demonstrating something new. Particle effects have been around since the first 3D games.
