Now that you mention it..

Anyway, this game does look pretty good, why can't they just use OpenGL and port it to Linux...Please...

i was saddened in the review that they forgot to mention to other very well done space combat/adventure sims

Wing Commander Series
Freespace Series

other than that i am getting this game when it's availble to us canadians.

In regards to the joystick issue, i have one and the demo worked flawlessly with it.

OpenGL, LOL. Why on earth would they want to make the game on that!?

It may be more work, but OpenGL is more efficient, and practically as good, just Microsoft don't want devs to do that

Nobody wants to read a joystick obituary, so I decided to dig deeper and rekindle an old relationship with the trusty Sidewinder joystick that Microsoft produced, the best piece of equipment in the olden days to run any flight game. However, unbeknownst to me (which probably reflects the fall of the joystick) Microsoft has discontinued its support of the Sidewinder product. A desperate search later and the reality of it all hit me - joysticks are, in fact, all but dead. Most of the companies that supported them are now either gone or waning, and the games that you would usually play them on don't really even offer full support.
Ah the sidewinder, that is such a fun joystick to play with. What was the free game that came with that ?

I know Joysticks are still very popular with serious BF2 players, its the only way you use Plane/Helicopters well

In fact, i tried to prove you wrong, but i couldn't find any joysticks by logitech, and if forgotten the other really popular brand

Ha ha - I know it is astounding isn't it. I am thinking about doing some investigations to found out what happened to joysticks. I am pleased you enjoyed the review! :)

They wouldn't, but I'd like them so I could at least play some quality games.

Joysticks are stil the only real way to play Flight Simulator, joysticks arn't gone, they're just very specialised, and people won't code for them if a mouse is just fine.

Monster truck madness 2 if I rember correctly. I still break the sidewinder out on a rain days for a flight sim or two.

Anyone remember starcontrol 2? Game was out in the 486 days, man I used to play that game till I was blue in the face.

Recently, some guys got a hold of the source code I guess and reworked the game to work on modern systems. Do a google search for "Urquan Masters", you'll find em.
Quote Ringold 19th August 2006, 00:41
Star Control 2 I never played, but I sure blew some time on Star Control 3! I always wanted to go and get the back story from the earling SC's, but never got around to it..

I might be wrong about this, but I wouldn't expect that smaller dev's like these guys would spend the extra time necessary to make sure a game runs on linux, given its incredibly small market share. Make it work on Windows and you've got virtually everybody (including dual-boot linux guys). From a cost/benefit perspective, any dev that DOES make a commercial game for linux is just trying to make a statement, and not a financial one at that. That being said, having better games available on linux would help linux out in the acceptance department.. just don't expect shoe-string devs to waste precious capital on the effort. Esp if Ek-DMI's insinuation of DirectX/Windows being much easier to work with from a dev perspective.

Time for me to go check out the demo... Felt let down by Freelancer, and X-series put me to sleep, but this sounds good!

Oh, and the benchmarking -- i LOVE that! I hate when reviews who know nothing about their rigs say "It runs fine at a nice resolution on my system!" what is it? Specs? Resolution? in game settings? Any AA or AF available? IQ? Stability? They answer none of it, but you guys did. Many thanks.

Just wish my X800XL (equivalent assumably to that 6600GT) could handle 16x12...

onestly i don't think this is a great game... quest are all the same: " go kill that" "go bring that to..."
the market is just a waste of time u have to travel around but u don't earn enough... even if u find something to sell at te double of the price, making a quest is faster than travel around.

i don't know what u think about this game but i get bored just after 5-6 hours
Quote Kipman725 19th August 2006, 07:13
proud owner of a saitek cyborg evo force here. Sounds like the game is like freelancer where a joystick would be a hinderance as the game requires presision targeting and fast changes in direction. Don't worry the joystick isn't dead, what are the controlls on our real space fighters going to be :P

I don't think this game is meant to be an MMORPG...it's not going to be like "Collect 10 hyperdrives" or whatever. Give it some slack. FPS are all "kill/destroy" this.

But man, dogfighting for the win

Edit: On a side note, no more saying "***" allowed?

Dont know about fighters, but in civilian planes, this is the new gold standard:

SR22

See anything in front of the console, blocking instruments and whatnot? No? That's the point. Never flown an SR22 like that one myself, but I hear its nice and ergonomic, and definitely opens up the console.

I'm a little partial to the 'joystick' (DA20 ) myself.. something more manly about yanking a stick around between my legs.. or does that sound gay..? :| yeah.. nevermind..

Another vote for Independance War and Independance War 2: Edge of Chaos from me, absolutely fantastic and well worth looking up.

Did you perhaps search with your eyes closed, hands over your ears shouting 'lalalalala!'? Logitech make excellent joysticks, saitek are also very popular but they joysticks just arn't as good quality IMO.

But thanks to BF2 the joystick isn't dead, it's not just the flight simulator nuts that have them now, but this game I think is more suited to a keyboard and mouse setup.

I pre-ordered this from play and got it the day of release, accidentally played it to 4am, fantastic game for it's price, havn't played it since though as I've been a bit busy :(

also for the modding option

Ah, the nostalgia of the original Wing Commander (sadly, while the game was ground breaking, the movie looked to me like a re-hash of old WW2 stuff).

What joystick are you using?

@ $49.50 Canadian it's not exactly a bargain so I think I'll look for a few more reviews

:) :) :) ROFLMAO @ last bit

The dual side mounted sticks (SR22) look odd since one for righties & the other for lefties - old style sticks look like a better idea to me. (Although at first glance I thought it was 2 sticks for one person & thought that was cool)

Yep, found joysticks @ Logitech too (though the link to game controllers had a pic of a steering wheel). Being a lefty I like my Saitek Cyborg evo, but sadly it has gotten too little use lately.

actually i think the perspective screws that up a bit, but it kind of looks to me as if that thing could be in the middle

Although i'm not an expert on it ;)

It looks promising at least. I just ordered a new joystick of ebay becuase mines an old serial port and my mobo doesnt have a home for it anymore *sniff* anyway i brought it to play tachyon: the fringe, i love that game and thought i could do with playing it again, i dont care about the graphics its just good fun, much like this game sounds.

In the review it said that joystick support was limited, any ideas which ones are supported?
Quote lcdguy 22nd August 2006, 14:22
My Saitek St-220 Worked in the demo. When i get the game i'll let you know :D
