I'm on the second to last chapter now, I'm really enjoying this game. Fast and frantic, it's damn awesome.

The graphics have had an upgrade too I feel

You could turn that on in the original, but it was off by default. It's "display information on crosshair" or something like that - one side is your remaining ammo, other is the health.

Hmm.. Didn't know that, seems usefull though since you're constantly staring at your crosshair while you play
So I'm guessing it's on by default for Episode 1?

Finally finished decrypting the bloody think by half 6 and finished the game by half 9.

First half of the game was boring. 2nd half was pritty exciting but it ended too soon.

I was under the impression that you play as alyx for a part of the game. dunno where i got that from.

Its nothing compared to HL2. No vehicles and exactly the same content. just in a different "map" if you like. a few new monsters but nothing to write home about.

I expected more but I guess its only a small episode so it was worth the money.

HDR was nice and very effective. It ran alot better with HDR than the HL2 technology level when they first showed off HDR, its clear they worked on optimizing it(since i have the exact same hardware as when i played HL2)

Overall I was slightly dissapointed by the game. Still for £9 I will class it as a treat.

I have Half life 2 but I havent played it yet (please dont hurt me) but all this Episode 1 banter is sparking my interest in the game. How many episodes will there be £9 sounds good for a game, well part of one but if theres like 10 episodes that one expensove game

I can't wait to play this! I am going to wait until the weekend so i can play without worrying about school work.

finished aswel, it was quite disapointing i thought, it was a visual splender but bits got repetative and boring, they could of done better but it was a good game. would of finished it alot sooner if steam had realised id instaled it with a dvd insted of being gay and trying to preload it all the time, anyone else have that problem???
Fr4nk 1st June 2006, 22:54 Quote
Ok, this is odd, it runs even though its 65%, ahwell, I'm happy XD.

Finished also. Great game, awesome graphics. I disagree that it became repetative. For an FPS it was pretty varied. The escort duty and set pieces were excellent. Any news on when Episode 2 will be released? Cause the trailer to that looks even better. New enemies/allies/environments. I think we'll see what the source engine can really do.

@Will: If you were in the hospital 30 minutes ago you should finish the game pretty soon.
l665 1st June 2006, 23:15 Quote
thats what i found repetative the escort bit, but thats just me i guess. some good puzzels in this one and little details, did you notice at one point if you turned your tourch off, alyx played a prank on gordon??? ^^ LAMO
dliberate 1st June 2006, 23:21 Quote
Yeah I guess they could have done more with that - particularly considering the handy-dandy free ammo. The prank was pretty funny - fooled me anyway! Dr. Kleiner's appearances cracked me up. Especially his considered medical opinion.. :p
l665 1st June 2006, 23:23 Quote
me aswel, god dam alyx. what other little details did you notice? when you pointed the tourch directly at her eyes she would sheild them, found that good.
dliberate 1st June 2006, 23:32 Quote
@Will: Sniper + laser guided rocket = mess.

I'm trying to think of other little touches that were particularly good. I think Alyx's A.I. in general is praise worthy. Much better than the cannon fodder we were given in the orignal game - she uses cover a well, avoids grenades and is pretty damn useful in a firefight.. assuming its not in the dark.

It might have been nice had she not been invulnerable to add a bit more realism to the game. Though considering those grenade toting "zombines" always made a bee-line straight for me I'm not sure if it would have much of an overall effect on the difficultly of the game.
l665 1st June 2006, 23:37 Quote
lol zombines, that was some suttle comady by her!

either it was the computer im using but i found the g-man skin looking even more stunning that in hl2 (upgraded since i played it)

She knocked me off one of the bridges on the very first level running past me (away from the big sucky thing).

I thought it was all too easy to let Alyx make all the kills in the co-op parts in order to conserve ammo.
dliberate 1st June 2006, 23:45 Quote
:) That's pretty funny. Sorry, I probably shouldn't laugh. Yeah, the reason I suggested making Alyx vulnerable was to stop that ammo conservation tactic. Though I have to admit that didn't worry me too much. I'd have been far more irritated if she walked straight into the line of a sniper laser or stayed next to a grenade as the normal friendly A.I. seems to. It's refreshing to fight with someone vaguely competant.

3.5 hours of gameplay for $20? Not even close to worth it. I paid $35 for Opposing Force which was a --full-- game. When the price drops, I'll consider it.
Leitchy 2nd June 2006, 00:32 Quote
20 is nothing, you'll probably find that sorta ammmount in ure pockets or on the floor somewhere. Raid your penny/cent Jar!!!

It filled my night anyways, wither or not i'd rather be at a pub spending the money, or at home is debatable, but anyways. Will happily go to bed now o/
Faulk_Wulf 2nd June 2006, 01:02 Quote
I guess you do have a point there.

well maybe for you, but for alot of people, $20 / £11-12 is a fair amount of money, escpecially for a mere 3 hours entertainment ....

Why is it that hospitals always have horrendous medical experiments in them that look nothing like they are for the benefit of patients?
I believe mr blogger, this is due to the fact that those combine rockets drop all over the place, drop headcrab's down
Hospitals and heavilly crowded, concealed areas are likely to end up with many zombies
