what bothered me about COD2 is that it looked as good on a 6800GT as it did on a 360. Had a play with one a week or so ago and was seriously underwhelmed :|

I agree! We're still a long way away from final dev kits, and no price has been announced... basically, there's barely any information available on the PS3 apart from the raw specs, and people are already saying the 360 can beat it?

I don't think it will be long before PCs catch up to, and surpass, Xbox360 in gaming quality.
Considering that quite a few 360 games have PC versions either out already or planned, that's a given. The only thing is, developers seem to be deliberately dumbing down the graphics from the 360 versions (e.g. Need For Speed: Most Wanted; possibly King Kong as well, haven't had a chance to see the full version yet, but the demo sucks graphically). Gears of War will be released for the PC as well; Unreal Engine 3.0 is running on PCs already.
At any rate, I dunno about triple core processors, but quad core processors are scheduled for 2007 (both AMD and Intel).
As far as graphics cards go... well, we all know the pace at which that section of technology evolves.

However, I think it will be a lot longer before PCs start catching up to what the Cell chip is supposedly capable of.
I dunno. I'm an unabashed PS3 fanboy, but I agree with a lot of other people who've been saying that their specs should be taken with a pinch of salt. Therefore, I'll personally reserve judgement on the Cell chip (which I was fanatically excited about when I first heard of it :p) till we see more than just tech demos.
i'd just like to say, after waiting in line for ten and a half hours, the xbox 360 is reallly reallly reallly damn cool. I dont know what people are talking about the jaggies, I have call of duty 2 and project gotham and I haven't noticed anything like jaggies at all. It really really is a sweet system, you have to really give it a chance before you just start saying that it didn't live up to the hype.
first of all i dont consider myself to be an xbox fanboy at all, i loved sega and at one time i could be considered a fanboy back in the day for them. i didnt realize he was joking for that i apologize. even though i dont care for sony, im not ignorant to the facts or blind to how games are made.
the architecture is so different between the ps3 and 360 that no direct comparison can be made. however the one common thing said by developers is that the gap between the two consoles will be far closer then in any previous generation. IMO both consoles will release games that look so good it wont make a difference what system its on. for any nay-sayers i would say actually wait for games to be built for the system before you make an opinion. many consider the MGS4 trailer to be next gen and kojima himself said that the 360 can run that demo, so that itself should speak for something. as for the faulty systems, its expected, youll have that with any system launch and with consoles becoming more complex its bound to happen. i played for 7 hours straight yesteday and i have had no probs with my 360
as for sony and their "claims" i dont take their word on anything. anyone dilusional enough to believe the hype about the Cell chip obviously forgot the bloated specs they released for the ps2. emotion chip anyone? i wont be buying the grillmaster with its boomerang controller since im sure it wont live up to the hype.
im not saying one will be better then the other, i think they will be able to co-exist evenly, its just the 360 meats my needs better. any one "fanboy" could have a counter attack to the other console's advantage. to me they both end dead even.

What do you mean? There's gameplay footage of Unreal Tournament 2007 running on a GeForce 7800 GTX available, and it shows that UE3.0 is capable of the sort of graphics promised in the screenshots. And let's not forget the UE3.0 demonstration that was shown at E3...
Tech demos and final products are very different things... that and the Gears Of War screenshots are either rendered or heavy photoshopped afterwards, but that was some time ago.

It would if he had actually said it. Instead, we get some strange thirdhand report about a friend of Kojima's who said he said the 360 could have run the demo...

There's truth in what you say... :) Ah well, guess we'll find out when the game releases. From launch to February 2006 is a long way to fall. :(
i haven't been impressed with the xboxat all, it's the same as the xbox but with some 'better' gaphics which make it look a little lame as some things look rubbish....
I dont think that many people have been impressed with the 360 once they get over the fact that all it is, is a graphical leap with the same games. You couldnt really tell in america since it 'sold out', but only selling 120,000 units in 2 days in japan? Shows a true lack of being impressed. In fact it sold 50% less than the xbox in both japan -and- america.

Might this have been due to lack of availibility? :|

You cant really tell, since they couldnt keep up with demand in america. They could of only sold a few more thousand units..or sold millions. However they had -more- than enough demand in japan and still sold pretty badly.
But who's surprised by that? I mean there have been Japanese people asked whether they'd buy a PS3 or a XBox360 and like 75% of them said to buy a PS3 and about 8% (maybe even less, don't remember exactly) wanted to buy a XBox.
Wait for sale numbers of PS3 in Japan. They'll be sold out after like 5 minutes. And half a year later the rest of the world will buy one. All except Australia I expect. :p
It will be interesting to see what the PS3 is like when it comes out however there are a few things that still overshaodw it. The most being teh cell processor, while yes it sould like a new way to programme/process information it is a NEW technology meaning the games will take longer to make and more costly, but there was a report about the latest yeilds of the cell chips that only 3 or 4 of the 8 cores worked.
Of course Sony might choose to release early to try and stem the flow of 360 sales but if they launch with only 50% of the cells working and in later gens they get all the cells working what do they tell the game manufactures? Oh sorry you cant use anything more than 50% of the power avalible becasue we c0cked up?
Also seeing as MS did it, I think Sony should step up to the plate and release worldwide in one go.
Also the price will be a major barrier when one of the Sony guys said the cost of hte console will be beyond the means of an average household. Ganted you will have the fanboys who will buy it but if the parents are confronted with teh options of a £500 PS3 or a £150 360 i think the cheaper will win, plus MS has a vast reserve of cash that Sony simply cant match.
I am really enjoying playing PGR3 on my 360. The only game i've ever had close to it was GT3 on my PS2 and this is far more realistic and fun to play on, I love powersliding :D
If you can find one at retail price, buy it - its great fun.
Sorry to resurrect the dead thread but I've just come back from a 2 week vacation at my mom's...
I had the chance to play a bit on a 360. Fifa 06 RTWC... My first thought was that it looked awesome with the grass not being a flat 'floor' but looked real! I then gave it a try and witnessed game play was like PES5 with better graphics... not a surprise though.
But then I got pissed! After every foul, every throw in or whatever there were these niiiice looking out-of-play-cinemas with an awesome 2-5 fps. And no the - ain't wrong here. It lagged as ****. It was like playing Fear on a GeForce 5200 at 1024 max details. I mean WTF?! Don't tell me it was because they only had beta consoles before! If they had to make it run on a beta console it should run on the finished 360 like hell but it didn't. And then I had to realise that playing with somewhat like tower camera when running to the upper end of the field when you start seeing the crowd it lagged too! Not as bad as in oop cinemas but bad enough it does, ain't it?!

I'll go take a look at some recent ones...
It did look good. Although I'm sticking with my PS2 for a fair while yet.
