The more crinkly gamers among you may remember when the original Wolfenstein 3D burst onto the 386 scene, causing squeals of glee with its smooth 3D action, not to mention the chance to gun down a mutant Hitler equipped with twin machine guns. However, we haven’t been given any new Nazi-gunning action since 2001’s Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but id Software plans to rectify this with a brand new Wolfenstein game.

The new game’s announcement came via Activision, which was recently dropped as the publisher of id’s forthcoming Rage game in favour of EA. Few details have been revealed about the new Wolfenstein, although Activision released plenty of screenshots this morning, which you can see below.

Activision describes the new game as ‘the ultimate supernatural thriller,’ and revealed a few details of the story too. The game promises to be set in a ‘near-fictional, historical WWII setting,’ in which you will ‘battle against combat troops, otherworldly forces, and the dark science created by a supernatural Nazi force hell-bent on world domination.’ Activision also promises ‘an arsenal of conventional and otherworldly weapons’ to help in your attempts to annihilate the Nazi war machine.’

No release date for the game has been revealed yet, but Activision says the game will be available on the PC, as well as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
