New GT200 chips could be out in just a few months, says the rumour mill

Although Nvidia's GeForce 9800 GX2 has only just been released, rumours are starting to circulate about a successor to the card that could be released as early as July this year.

The guys at Expreview claim to have spoken to sources in the industry who say that Nvidia has a new G9x core codenamed GT200, which will be used in two new cards; the single-GPU GeForce 9900 GTX, and the dual-GPU GeForce 9900 GX2.

Expreview says it doesn’t have any more detailed information than that, but a forum user on Anandtech called TulipGTX claimed to have 3DMark scores from an Alpha GT200 GPU in February. In a GPU-Z screenshot of the supposedly benchmarked chip (see below), the card had 512MB of GDDR4 memory, but GPU-Z couldn’t probe the card for any other information. The card scored 16,646 in 3DMark06, but TulipGTX said that he would expect a score of up to 21,000 using the final silicon.

Expreview claims that both cards will be released in July this year, but we’ll have to wait and see if this turns out to be true. In the meantime, you’ll be pleased to know that another big hardware NDA (non-disclosure agreement) expires at 2pm this afternoon. If you want to find out what it is, then check back here later this afternoon.
