Rumour control: AMD to launch Radeon HD 3850 X2

New dual GPU graphics card could cost under £150 if the rumours are to be believed

ATI / AMD Radeon HD 3870 X2

Following on from the release of its Radeon HD 3870 X2 in January, AMD / ATI is apparently planning to release a new X2 card based on its Radeon HD 3850 GPUs in order to entice budget-strapped gamers to the world of dual-GPU graphics.

The tech gossip pros at DigiTimes in Taiwan claim to have spoken to sources in the industry that say the new X2 card will support 512MB (2x 256MB) and 1GB (2x 512MB) memory configurations, using 1.8GHz DDR3 memory. The site claims that the card is scheduled for release in May, and will be positioned against Nvidia's 512MB GeForce 8800 GTS.

The best news, however, is the price. If the information on DigiTimes is correct, and bear in mind that this is all rumour here, then the new X2 cards could be priced as low as $299 US (£149.76) for a 512MB card.
