A new socket, loads more pins and a hell of a lot of silicon
Processors have generally become smaller as technology has progressed, but it looks as though Intel's new Nehalem CPUs are going to dwarf today's Core 2 chips if these photos are anything to go by.
A forum user on Expreview called sxs112.tw obviously has some close ties with tech sources in Taiwan, as they've apparently managed to snap some shots of the forthcoming CPU. When placed next to a current Core 2 QX9770, the 2.8GHz Nehlaem chip is clearly much bigger, showing that the new chips will require a new socket and will require many more pins than today's LGA775 sockets.
It looks as though LGA775 is nearing the end of its life, but it's had a good run, especially when compared with AMD's journey through Socket 939, AM2 and AM2+ in the same timeframe.
