Intel announces Core 2 Extreme QX9770

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX770

Never one to miss an opportunity to rub its arch competitor’s face in a truck full of manure, Intel has today announced yet another 45nm Penryn Core 2 Extreme CPU, the Core 2 Extreme QX770, less than a month after it released the Core 2 Extreme QX9650.
The chip was originally scheduled to be announced next year, but for some curious reason Intel has now brought the date forward to today. That’s funny, you might think, as AMD finally released its quad-core Phenom CPUs today too, which makes the moving of this announcement look about as coincidental as one of AMD’s new announcements during Intel’s developer forum.

Nevertheless, AMD has little to worry about, as the new chip is going to be priced right at the top end of the market. The Core 2 Extreme QX9770 uses a 1,600MHz front side bus, and is clocked at 3.2GHz. Not only that, but we’ve got one in the Custom PC labs, and we’ll have the benchmark results up later on this week. Intel told Custom PC that the chip will be priced higher than the current flagship Core 2 Extreme QX9650, and will be available in January 2008.
