Rumour control: Nvidia G92 to launch in November

Mid-range chip will apparently be fabricated on a 65nm process, and will feature DisplayPort compatibility

We’ve already spotted several rumours about Nvidia’s GeForce 9800 GPU being available for Christmas this year, but the Taiwanese news hounds at DigiTimes reckons it’s got a solid launch date on Nvidia’s new graphics chip, codenamed G92.

According to the site’s sources, which it anonymously cites as ‘graphics card makers,’ the ‘mid-range’ chip will be launched on 12 November and will be fabricated on a 65nm process. As well as this, the G92 is also said to support DisplayPort, HDMI and PCI-E 2.

Interestingly, however, the site claims that ‘Nvidia plans to replace the GeForce 8800 GTS series with the G92,’ which suggests that it’s going to be much more powerful than Nvidia’s current (and disappointing) mid-range GeForce 8600 chips, but not a high-end part. As expected, the site’s sources also say that there will be no dramatic change in architecture, and that the chips could ‘only be considered an update of the GeForce 8 series since they will not include any major changes.’

Nvidia declined to comment on the rumour, and Adam Foat from the company simply told Custom PC that ‘We don’t talk about unannounced products.’ For what it’s worth, though, we reckon the launch date is probably pretty accurate, not only for the mid-range chip, but also for the high-end flagship chip in the same series, which is likely to be called the GeForce 9800. Of course, only time will tell, but it’s a safe bet that you’ll be able to put a GeForce 9800 card on your Christmas list.
