AMD announces quad CrossFire

Huge power supplies needed to feed four hungry graphics cards

It’s not often that a sequel wins praise from the critics, so AMD must be hoping that its forthcoming CrossFire 2.0 technology has more in common with ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ than ‘Dirty Dancing 2.’ It certainly looks set to be pretty epic, as it allows you to turn up to four GPUs in CrossFire mode.

The technology forms a part of AMD’s new ‘Leo’ platform, which is scheduled for launch in 2008. The platform will be based on AMD’s forthcoming RD800-series of motherboard chipsets, which will be required to get the four GPUs running, and will also support AMD’s forthcoming AM2+ Phenom X2 and X4 CPUs. Meanwhile, the GPUs will be based on AMD’s next generation of R700-series chips, which will be manufactured on a 55nm process.

AMD refers to the technology as ‘DirectX 10 performance scaling,’ and announced the plan at its Analyst Day last week.
