OCZ buys PC Power & Cooling

Premium memory maker OCZ has just purchased PSU manufacturer PC Power & Cooling for a cool $13 million. The payment comprises an upfront sum of $10 million, including a whopping $6 million in cash, and will be followed by a 'further contingent consideration of up to $3 million.'

OCZ claims that one of the reasons for the purchase was its desire to 'satisfy accelerating demand for high-quality PSUs, which is being driven by the increasing use of high-performance graphics cards.' OCZ also reckons that 'PC Power is considered, by the trade press, to be the leading brand in its sector in terms of product quality.'

This has certainly been borne out in our own tests, where PC Power & Cooling's Turbo-Cool 850 SSI proved to be 100 per cent stable, and also very efficient, drawing just 1,038W from the mains to produce 811W. In fact, we dubbed the PSU 'The most powerful PSU in the world,' although you had to pay almost £300 for it.

OCZ has also assured us that PC Power & Cooling's founder and sole shareholder Doug Dodson will remain as a member of OCZ's senior management team.

The move could certainly allow OCZ to corner the top end of the PSU market, and the company claims that the acquisition will increase OCZ's 'proportion of PSU revenues from 9 per cent to approximately 15 per cent'. OCZ wants the effect of the purchase to be immediate as well; a spokesperson for OCZ even told Custom PC that he believed OCZ will 'begin selling PC Power products as of today.'
