if this really, happened, i will start a rebel group, F.F.G or Freedom For Gamers.
Also, i guess it would be like another prohibition, tons of black market :gasp: videogames!

reminded me of the cult classic "they live", were all citizens are a mind-controlled horde who don't see the ugly aliens ruling earth. and all media and posters/magazines are full of words like "OBEY", "CONSUME", and "SLEEP". it could be happeing right now^^
Yipes... the sad thing is that the possibility for this is there, and very real. I think the only real thing that has stopped this from happening is the cost of it. Applying a system like this would be very costly and would take a long time, but I wouldn't doubt seeing the government trying to pass some 30 year plan implementing this. Everyone getting GPS chips, ID tags, etc. at birth... scary. :(
this is interesting but also frustrating as its happening more and more. like on tv for instance, parts of scrubs and that 70's show being cut out because of words that would have been aired months ago

You are. Some of these measures are already implemented, and the rest is no doubt under way.
This is still my biggest fear. It really seems like that's what all these "special interest groups" that are put together by the preppy "my family is perfect" people and "soccer mom" types are looking to create. Even though they'll never admit to their own families faults, they have no problem trying to restrict all that "evil" in the world from everyone else, because that's how they raise their family.
Communism does not work because there is no drive for people to do better than they are doing if everyone gets the same in the end. If it was a small community and people saw tangible benefits then it might, but certainly not for a country as a whole.
The few people in power get more powerful and richer, and the rest of them stay the same.
In capitalism people atleast have the chance of doing well if they work for it, although there may be other factors holding them back.
Brett - don't mean to be funny, but the world isn't heading this way, AMERICA is heading this way - the signs are there, but america isn't prepared to do anythign about it.
Recent shootings in that university show exactly what is happening, not the shootings themselves, or the behaviour of the individual (and yes, remember, it was one person, not a country that committed murder there) but the reaction to gun control, or the LACK of response to this or any other event like it just show how this may well happen again.
Here in europe, this is a LONG LONG way off, over here, the people still have power, the prime minister is not able to rig the voting system by ringing his brother and getting some pre-announcements to get him into office, the prime minister is a real bloke, whether you like him or not, he's the kind of guy who you might end up chatting to at a parents meeting at your kids school - or bump into at the supermarket. George Bush on the other hand is something else altogether. The people don't vote presidents in in America, they get told who to vote in. A choice between a giant douche and a turd sandwich (as south park so aptly put it)
The world isn't doomed, america is doomed, and so i guess by definition that means we'll follow suit - i would hope that our power as europeans (and i extend my 'our' to all of europe and beyond) but if past experience is anything to go by, we'll put on our sheep costumes and BAAA our way to hell.
As I see it, Europe is more than ripe for this sort of thing, and the US is serving as a wonderful distraction. My sincere hope is that the technology to get to the stars progresses faster than the technology to 'enslave' us. In the past, there has always been a frontier flee to, where 'threatening' ideas could be explored and flourish. I don't think there is any place left on Earth like that.
As far as I'm concerned, if this is what the people want, let them have it. But let me get away so I never have to deal with it.
Europe isn't ripe for this sort of thing at all tbh. Britain is though. Britain accepts without question the fact that it is the most watched nation on the planet, in France farmers take their shotguns to speedcameras(regularly). British people are leaning very heavily towards facism loss of rights, with which they want to buy safety, or enact "the greater good".
If anything I think the US is almost more ripe for this sort of stuff, but the US government doesn't seem to want to worry about stuff like this right now - or perhaps it just comes instinctively to them, when people want to go too far.
The only real comforting thing about all this sort of stuff is that it gets enacted because the masses let it, so they'll be forced to suffer it eventually.
i think as long as the 1st amendment remains unchanged in the US, things won't change - for the better or worse. the first amendment will keep such lifestyle control away, but it will also keep things like better firearm restrictions from happening too.
thankfully, australia doesn't have most of the violence and firearm problems the US has and so many restrictions on media are hardly seen as needed. then again, we don't get much say on the laws that get passed through, as can be seen with johny's workplace laws.
as many have already said tho, the scariest thing is that such a situation is very close to being reality, and only the minority know of it. i think a separatist country that supports the "old ways" will be needed for many of us to move to ;)

Yep you can't go far without being spotted on camera, or as it is soon to be spoken to by the cameras :(
