From my experiance I use nLite for XP, so I can make the most streamlined windows possible ... part of that is uninstalling that feature, then I either use Alcohol 120 or Nero.

Another sign of a Novice (more of a personal opinion) is anyone who uses the standard XP Themes ... Luna and the Chrome one. Personally, I don't even have the themes service running because I have been happy with my "Rainy Day" since Windows 95.

Is it so wrong to get mad at someone ... when you start deleting shortcuts and the person asks "why are you getting rid of those programs?"

Or when they can't double click something without moving the icon somewhere.

Real geeks use a subtly modded Classic...

Great article. Had me in stitches at work (good way to start the day). However, I do enjoy the occasional game of minesweeper.

In such games as Counter-Strike, where many of the expressions are derived from, it's an advantage to use lower resolutions than 1024. Having it higher just makes it look like you "think the graphics looks bad with lower resolutions".

If it's wrong, I'm in trouble. :) That drives me NUTS.

As cpemma said, if you have your desktop filled with shortcuts...

My mother still has, on every one of her computers:
"Try AOL FREE for 6 months"
"MusicMatch Jukebox"
"Try Quicken Loans"
"Customize your Dell"

and other great ones.

Oh, and Chris, backgrounds of space that you've edited in photoshop to make 16:9 widescreen format can still count as geeky, right? Particularly if your monitor is not widescreen...

No-one who has any PC experience owns any of the following:
  • New Floppy Disks (Any floppy disks must be at least 10 years old)
HEY! I have to buy new floppies like once a year because I lose the damn things. And yes, I still use floppy disks... mainly because Windows forces me to to install my controller card for my hdds.

"Now, get out there and 'pwn' those 'lam3rs'... and turn off that ridiculous office assistant."

If you were 'geek' enough, you'd do a custom install of office and completely remove the assistant feature in the first place. The paperclip used to haunt me, it's my way of exorcism.

Great article, though I visit PC World now and then, the last 3 times it has been to purchase wireless cards for various people. The only thing I've bought from the component section is a fan one night when my PC needed the extra air. It's good if you need a temporary solution until the .com order arrives.

Ah, good to see I conform with most of them. And the ones Idont conform with is because I dont do that stuff (I never enter NZ's version of computer world, dont buy many games, and all are bought off the net). Saw a similar thing recently that included coffee (no sugar, and not lots of milk), was a good laugh first thing in the morning, (im on holiday, so doesnt lighten up my school / work day.

Bah, that article itself is on a level of n00b-ishness. In my research over the past several years and over the evolution of the Internet, I've seen multiple distinct levels emerge. The guidelines there will only get you to the second level. Those of us in an even higher level don't "blog," or prescribe to any of the popular "community" type sites, or anything that's "something." This includes everything from avoiding DeviantArt at all costs, (my background, like my avatars and many other things, is ripped from a console game by yours truly) not using FaceBook in contrast to the other 21,999 students at my university, and so on.

Also, depending on where you fall elsewhere, using l33t-speak will either make you teh über-nerd, or teh über-dork. Those belonging in the former category will make sure to use accented letters where they're due. The are countless other guidlines I could give for advancing even further away from n00b-ishness, but it would likely take me a long time to list them all...

Well, I will admit half of those 'n00bish' traits I have

I have broken rule #1 far too many times to count...

I have not broken rule #2 with the exception of buying CD case holder smaller than 300... (because I don't have that many CDs)

I have not broken rule #3, I use a tech-abstract kinda wallpaper

I have broken rukle #4... no comment.

I have broken rule #5 only for the reason that my desk doesn't have enough room for 2 monitors and I am still saving up for something larger than my Samsung 15"... at least my current one is a TV/PC monitor :p

I have not broken rule #6, and thank God for the add/remove feature in XP...

I have broken rule #7 because my system isn't...um... that great...

I have not broken rule #8...yet

I have not broken rule #9, I used to do that though... but NOT when browsing the internet

I have not broken rule #10 and I live by it... minesweeper=the evil of everything.

Meh, I guess I semi-pwn :|

I have to have a floppy drive for bit-tech stuff - I get some motherboards with BIOS' installed that WILL NOT allow me to install Windows and use WinFlash to flash to the latest-available. In that case, I have to resort to a floppy drive. Yes, most of my disks have about 5 labels on them where they've been relabelled time and time again.

Enjoyable article, funny to see they all describe me well, apart from the fourth, which I disagree with. I'd say blogging(or at least, the whole myspace thing) is very non-leetish, its pretty noobish in fact, using your computer as a tool to describe something happening IRL..thats just wrong. Computers are for computer stuff, not IRL stuff :D

1337er is to have a floppy installed that you managed to wire up incorrectly blowing the 12V rail on your power supply...you HAVE to leave it installed just because you modded it so it stays, even broken.

After 17 months it has never been used but it sparkles in its spraypainted silver beauty.
