What’s next for the GeForce 500-series?

Posted on 10th Nov 2010 at 14:44 by Clive Webster with 56 comments

Clive Webster
Now that we’ve seen the speed of the GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB, our attention naturally turns to the future. Unfortunately, while we know some interesting things about the forthcoming ATI Radeon HD 6900-series, we’re still not allowed to tell you anything about it, so I’ll focus instead on what I think the rest of the GeForce 500-series might have in store.

Does the GeForce GTX 465 reveal Nvidia’s plans for Fermi?

Posted on 18th May 2010 at 17:20 by Clive Webster with 39 comments

Clive Webster
You’ll probably have read the rumours the first mid-range Fermi GPU from Nvidia will be called a GeForce GTX 465 – now it seems to me that’s an odd choice of branding for two reasons.

Firstly, 465 doesn’t fit the naming of the two current Fermi cards, the GeForce GTX 470 and GeForce GTX 480, which use even numbers rather than 5s.

Nvidia Ion 2 details, or so we think

Posted on 15th Feb 2010 at 10:56 by Richard Swinburne with 3 comments

Richard Swinburne
So I'm sitting here reading last month's (March 2010) PC Pro magazine, and I'm flicking through the Asus Tech-in-Style supplement and I noticed the latest Asus EeeTop PC ET2010PNT. It's an all-in-one with 20in display and Atom D510 inside. Underneath, it also lists 'Nvidia GeForce G310 ION2 graphics' as well!

ORLY?

Test Bench Roundup #2: Cooler Master and Homebrew Modded!

Posted on 3rd Feb 2010 at 11:00 by Richard Swinburne with 11 comments

Richard Swinburne
If you missed part one of our test bench roundup, catch it here.

Rolling straight on with part 2, the, uh, final part, in this two part extravaganza of open-top, naked PC goodness. We have a steel entry from Cooler Master that's built like a tank, and another homebrew mod I constructed way back in 2004. It's survived six years of abuse, and it has wheels. Possibly my greatest mod ever and certainly the cheapest.

Nvidia launches new budget graphics cards - do you care?

Posted on 16th Oct 2009 at 11:17 by Clive Webster with 29 comments

Clive Webster
After years (well, one at least) of Nvidia saying that it doesn't see the need in DirectX 10.1 because developers aren't demanding it and it has some DX10.1 features in its GT200 design anyway, it's finally made a DX10.1 GPU. However, it isn't a huge high-performance part to rival the HD 5870. It's a low-end part.

Nvidia has also trialled the 40nm fabrication process with this new GeForce GT 220 and GT 210 line-up.

The question is, do you care?

Posted on 8th May 2009 at 18:08 by Podcast with 34 comments

Podcast
The podcast returns for a third series, powered up by the addition of the bit-tech team and some new microphones from Shure. CPC Editor Alex, Reviews Editor Clive and bit-tech main man Tim take a look at the big stories in tech from the last month, including new graphics cards from ATI and Nvidia, and the Phenom II X4 955 BE which sees AMD returning to form. Tim talks about getting his new laptop, the Thinkpad, X301 and the panel then look ahead, taking in Windows 7 and DirectX 11. The games chart returns, but it looks depressingly familiar. Fortunately one of the team is still playing Mass Effect.

Are there any funny computer jokes?

Posted on 26th Mar 2009 at 12:24 by Clive Webster with 37 comments

Clive Webster
Most areas of our modern life seem easy to create jokes from – politics is an obvious choice, but you can probably think of quite a few jokes about pubs, traffic wardens, flying, pretty much everything. But it struck me last night that I haven’t heard a funny IT joke for ages. Or perhaps ever. The best I could up with was this:

Q: What’s Ali G’s favourite MP3 player?
A: An AiiiPod.

How lame is that?
