Week one’s Asus Xtreme Gaming Summit post got quite a response, and what’s more, there were some terrific ideas – if you’re interested in motherboards, the entire thread is well worth a read, with some really smart ideas about how motherboard design could be improved.

Both ourselves and Asus have been over the posts, and can announce the first five winners of the competition. Read on to find out which lucky bit-tech readers will be heading to the event on the 28th of August in London, and of course, snagging themselves some choice hardware to boot.

Egads, just how many buzz-words can an IT journo fit into a blog post title these days? I blame Google, to whom all us online folk are beholden. Maybe I should just add a few hot search terms...

Or not. The purpose of this blog post is I thought I'd share some new shots Asus has sent through of its first P55 board to supplement James' preview of the Asus P7P55-Evo that went up a week or so ago.

Supposedly these are of the final retail board. The main update is the Southbridge cooler, which seems massive, and that weird Turbo-V thing. Pics and more discussion below the break.

By now you’ve hopefully read all about the Asus Xtreme GlobalSummit competition we’re running, and marvelled at the excellent selection of hardware prizes on offer. Unlike most of the competitions we’ve run in the past, this one adds interesting experience to the mix – firstly, there’s an afternoon in London talking with Asus’ R&D team, playing games and tinkering with the latest hardware.

It’s also about communication. Asus has a great reputation for the design and innovation that goes into its motherboards, and the firm is keen to get the opinions of real enthusiasts (hence the blogging/forum posting part of the competition), and to give you a peek behind the scenes of the design and development process. New laptops at the Asus Lamborghini Event

Last week we headed along to the Lamborghini dealership in South Kensington to pick up the keys to our new car check out Asus’ laptop line-up for the second half of 2009. Asus announced its first Lamborghini branded laptop, the VX1, back in 2005, and has been steadily producing computers tangentially related to supercars ever since, so the venue wasn’t completely inappropriate.

Do Overclocking Tournaments Work?

I'm confused.

I admire the people that take part in overclocking tournaments but I fail to understand why so much money is plowed into them by big hardware companies, presumably keen to use the event as a marketing tool.

Gigabyte has its Gigabyte Open Overclocking Championship (GOOC), MSI has MOA, and Asus and DFI have also had a stab at running their own events, and I'm curious to understand if you, the readers, follow them, takes note of what happens and even cares?

Where are all the AMD AM3 motherboard reviews?

We know a lot of our readers want to see AM3 motherboard reviews and we have been trying to accommodate this request since February - honest! Fanboys have been crying bias and that couldn't be any farther from the truth - here's why.

We have been working on no less than three 'new' AMD motherboards since we completed our Socket AM3 processor review at the start of February, but the problems have been continual, and no manufacturer has been left unmarked by the spattering of not quite there yet.

Normally we'd just go ahead with a review since the products are all ready on sale, but with each one we want to get to the bottom of their wierdness before we post a review. Also, we'd usually keep the inevitable debugging process sort of thing between ourselves and the parties involved but as it stands we don't know when we'll be able to get you a full review so we thought at least we'd keep you updated on our already delayed progress.

RIP: Asus responds to its flaming motherboard

Asus has responded with a detailed report as to why its M3A-H/HDMI went up in flames and smoke. After publishing the first episode following the freshening smell of burnt electronics festered in our labs, Asus was keen to take the board back to Taiwan for further testing and let us know how it got on.

RIP: Asus M3A-H/HDMI bursts into flames

All right, so the title sounds quite dramatic and I know the rule, "pics or it never happened" but unfortunately we were more concerned about yanking the power switch and reaching for the fire extinguisher before grabbing a camera. Sorry.

RIP: Asus M3A-H/HDMI bursts into flames

So we swapped out an Athlon 64 FX-62 dual-core for a Phenom X4 9600 B2 stepping chip in Harry's machine. Both have a similar TDP and Harry needs the two more cores that the Phenom has for his work.
