Series 3, Episode 4 - The Gaming Podcast, in association with 50 Cent
Posted on 14th Aug 2009 at 10:17 by Podcast with 29 comments
We’re changing it up on the podcast, with a gaming only podcast this week, and a hardware one to follow next week. So yes, Episode 4 of Series 3 of the combined Custom PC and bit-tech podcast is here. It’s hosted by Joe, and he is joined by Harry, Rich and Alex. Apparently 50 Cent is in the new Call of Duty game, id Software don’t like the PS3 and there’s going to be lots of goat sex in Dragon Age Origins. There’s also a brand new competition!

Much more interesting than talking about boring hardware ;)
EDIT:
Oh, also, I meant to mention: totally agree about Trine. Last level is rubbish to the extreme.
Looking forward to the Arcade edition, if only to hear whether Joe finishes his story about HOTD3 and mentions both where himself and myself ended up on the leader board.
I agree with you on Left4Dead: it's a funny old game. I find myself aiming for versus because that's the competitive game, the one us gamers sort of are drawn to. But in all honestly, where the game shines brightest is straight forward Expert Campaign. That's the way it should be played, and I only need to abandon versus for a campaign or two to be reminded why everyone loved it in the first place.
Maybe in a few episodes time, possibly. I'm very keen to have some special guests if possible, but I think it's important that we learn to get the basics right first. Walk before we dance.
Volume is perfect for me. Hate to be partisan, but you guys should send it this to hexus and tell them how to do an entertaining bit of media :D
who? :?
hehe I liked it.. my gf is here though and she said, you can listen to that all day.. I'm told her it's not all day- it's a podcast, and she's all whatever
btw she said you guys are annoying =] this was the best one heard so far- can relate to some of those games.. and you used rubbish alot
least she laughed about the goat wearing eyeliner- if you want a game that was dev'd for adults back in the 80's joe.. check out custards revenge :) http://classicgaming.gamespy.com/View.php?view=GameMuseum.Detail&id=282
Take a look what the community is doing, might interest you :)
i don't understand why developers hate PS3 so much. surely it'd be like developing for a 8 core machine with a little weaker on GPU front.
No one develops for 8 core at the moment - the current model makes it very hard to schedule, especially when they are waiting for the GPU to process the information.
To make things worse, the PS3 uses a single dispatch processor based on IBM PPC technology, then several other in-order Cell cores to do the grunt of the work. It's a multi-multi-system.
Not to mention the RSX uses GDDR3, a derivative of SDRAM technology, but the Cell uses RDRAM.
I highly suggest reading the book about the development of the Xbox and Cell chips.. it's on amazon, I cant remember the name sorry. It's something like "behind the next generation games consoles" and was written by an IBM engineer. I think you can only order it from amazon.com
then PS3 can be said to be ahead of its time. multi-core optimisations will be needed eventually.
the dispatch way of doing things is not that bad, it's like having an embedded processor to dispatch work to other co-processors. there are a lot of work done on such thing. Critical Blue does a great job of it.
thanks for the suggestion, i'll look into it.
Found it very entertaining, good stuff. Games are certainly the most interesting thing to hear discussed in podcasts. I noticed Harry didn't talk as much as the rest of you; perhaps you should have a talking-stick to pass around during recording
Oh, and I'm glad Farenheit's sex scenes were mentioned. Those traumatised and embarrassed the hell out of me, thought I was just being a wuss...
I just listened to 30 mins in my ipod and thought the volume was perfect - much better than before.
The real test is now as I listen on the drive in to work through my car hook ups. I'll give you and EDIT in an hour. . .
EDIT: First, getting back to the volume. In the car the volume is still off, and I thought it could be me, but since I have a built in Ipod Dock I knew I wasn't losing anything through the connection. Is there anyway to boost the volume more? Overall the volume levels were nice, but low once I took off the headphones.
Second : the Fahrenheit bit made me ROFL. The sex bit really turned me off of that game , even though I had enjoyed it pushing buttons to make the characters climax was very embarrassing and really ruined the play of the game.
Custard's Revenge I actually played in the 80's!!!! That will prolly give my age away, but my dirty old Uncle had a few of these xXx titles for his Atari and I would sneak play them when no one was around. Super boring game, even for a prepubescent teen. . . . I also <3 how it was billed as 'Swedish Erotica' but made in the US. . . . .
Ninja EDIT: found this just now, great blog on these games but it is NSFW so know where the boss is. . .
I remember quite a few games I traded, even one called space pussies- it was galactica but with vaginas coming down.. and you can guess what your ship looked like
Ghouls, blood and lots of long hair? Can only be F.E.A.R! I guessed it was this screenshot from the description, making it Fear 2. It was the mention of children's drawings on the wall that made me sure it was this one (although I'm not 100% sure, as I was only required to guess the game. Was I correct guys?)
You know it's the same prize right? :p
It be called:
The Race for a New Game Machine, Creating the Chips Inside the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3"

Used copy for £6. Bargain!
Well maybe I want TWO copies! Yeah, didn't think of that did you!
Close enough. You don't need to identify the exact show and, IIRC, the screenshot wasn't even one from this site.
