Hardware 12 - SpineTech Beta Now Open

Posted on 18th Jun 2010 at 10:10 by Podcast with 9 comments

Podcast
Welcome to Episode 12 of the bit-tech and Custom PC podcast, brought to you from our plush media suite located just outside of Cape Town. No, really, we've got the vuvuzelas and everything... Oh, alright, we're actually in the usual backroom of our central London office.

Now that we've recovered from Computex 2010 and got things into some semblance of order in our lives, we can reflect on what the show had to offer. Exactly why was Nvidia harping on about 3D when the rest of the show was tablet mad? Could it be that Nvidia has some high-end graphics cards to shift, perhaps? We look back at Asus' huge Immensity motherboard, PowerColor's crazy HD 5770 range and why ARM are feeling so confident at the moment.

Gaming Podcast 13 - Harry Singing

Posted on 21st May 2010 at 15:38 by Podcast with 21 comments

Podcast
The new Gaming Podcast is finally here and it has much to recommend it - educated discussion, witty banter, Joe's relaxed charm and natural charisma. Also, Harry singing sponsorship messages in the highest voice he can manage.

Consider that an official warning.

Up for discussion in this episode of the Gaming Podcast are some of the most interesting bits of news from the past week or two in the games industry. We talk about the launch of Green Man Gaming, the fact that Steam is now available on the Mac and also why Joe doesn't like DotA games very much.

On top of that we've got the usual Guess the Screenshot competition, with this week's prize of a Steel Series gaming headset up for grabs.

As always, we want to hear your thoughts and opinions on the podcast, so send things in to the usual podcast address or simply drop your thoughts in the forums.

Use the links below to listen in and good luck on surviving the anguish which is Harry's interpretation of a melody...

Hardware Podcast 11 - Laptop On Fire

Posted on 7th May 2010 at 10:44 by Podcast with 9 comments

Podcast
It's been a while, we'll give you that, but the hardware podcast is back in town with a jam-packed eleventh episode. Alex, Harry, James and Antony sit down to discuss everything that's happened in the world of hardware since we were last on air.

We begin with Fermi, specifically the rumours that Nvidia is aggressively trying to expand its range by launching a mobile version of its new GPU. How will such a hot chip run in a laptop though?

Next up, we talk about Intel and AMD's new CPUs, including the six-core AMD Phenom II X6 1090T, and Harry goes deep into SSDs. Rebranding, new controller chips and the question of whether all the manufacturers are missing the obvious are all addressed.

Finally, we answer some reader mail and speculate about which keyboard Scarlett Johansson prefers to use.

As usual, you can also win a tat bag choice selection of quality branded merchandise by correctly guessing what mystery item of hardware we're talking about this episode – send your guesses to podcast [at] custompc [dot] co [dot] uk with the subject line ‘Hardware 11’.

As ever, thanks to Brad Sucks for providing the theme song - it's actually his track, Dropping Out of School.

Gaming Podcast 12 - With Added BBC

Posted on 8th Apr 2010 at 11:32 by Podcast with 11 comments

Podcast
As we continue with our Made in the UK Week, we’re anxious not to get stuck just voicing our own opinions. We want to hear what other people close to the UK games industry think too, which is why we invited the BBC to come and join us for a special edition games podcast.

Well, not all of the BBC, obviously. Just Adam Rosser, who runs Radio 5’s Game On! show, which is one of the few places where computer games can get a decent mainstream outlet in the UK. You can find out more about Adam’s show over at the official BBC Radio 5 website.

Adam kindly obliged us and sat down with Joe, James and Alex to discuss what’s we’ve so far included in Made in the UK Week, as well as a host of other topics – some of which are only tangentially related to…well, anything.

Gaming Podcast 11 - With A Vengeance

Posted on 30th Mar 2010 at 17:20 by Podcast with 5 comments

Podcast
After an incredibly long break caused by a mixture of holidays and laziness, we're back with another Custom PC and Bit-tech.net Gaming Podcast. Yay!

Our 11th episode unfortunately kicks off with some sad news as Clive, Harry and Joe say goodbye to Richard, who has embarked on stranger tides for lands afar. Well, after a stopover in Wales anyway.

Not ones to dwell for long though, they quickly move on to other topics and set themselves to discussing all the latest topics the games industry has to offer. Ubisoft DRM! Just Cause 2! Why C&C4 is rubbish! And, um, The Witcher!

On top of that we announce the long overdue winner to the last Guess The Screenshot competition, wade through your emails and tweets - and Clive even takes the time to try his hand at tech support. It's all thrilling stuff, so use the links below to choose how you want your ears to be assaulted and then let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Hardware Podcast 10 - All Praise the Capital of Hardwareland

Posted on 1st Mar 2010 at 12:20 by Podcast with 15 comments

Podcast
The long-awaited (or so we’d like to think) tenth episode of the Hardware Podcast sees Rich, Clive, Harry and James rather confused about tenses and timelines. You’d think that four reasonably intelligent hardware reviewers would be able to understand that if you record a pod on Thursday to cast on Monday, you need to act as if Monday is in the past. Apparently not. Revealed in this pod: the capital of Hardwareland is Gulftown, and the most effective components for an energy-efficient PC.
