As we reported a few days ago, Futuremark is back with a new benchmark, 3D Mark 11. The official site is now live, and features pictures and a preview video.
According to Futuremark's YouTube page, "3DMark 11 uses a native DirectX 11 engine which makes extensive use of all the new features in DirectX 11 including tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading."
You can see it in action in a video which features a pair of MSI-branded submarines floating underwater - embedded after the jump.
It looks pretty spectacular - there's lots of attention paid to lighting, but what caught my eye was the rusted and barnacle encrusted steel valves; it looks like an excellent combination of technologies such as tessellation and normal mapping to provide a real feeling of ageing material.
The YouTube page also confirms that "there will be a free edition that allows unlimited runs available at launch" and that we'll first be able to see it running at the Computex trade show in Taipei at the start of June - Rich, Harry and myself will all be there, so we'll be sure to let you know what it looks like!

No I don't think so. There was an M, S and an I in there I think.
ISM maybe? Never heard of them.
DX11 is brilliant because it not only allows you to view it in DX11 glory, but Dx10, 10.1 and even the ancient dx9.
Cheers,
S*D
Q: Will you buy another PC to have it running all day every day, beside you, keeping you warm? :)
Looks like you missed the huge "work in progress" across the upper half of the video, Mister Details.
It must suck when even the BT staff start ripping the piss out of you...
We've been doing it since the game launched. It's become an in-office joke :D
with tessellation, i think we'll see Fermi taking a huge lead in this benchmark.
Certainly I think tessellation is the future of getting games to look better.
The vignetting is pretty nice though.
Yup, the old gas boiler is inefficient, costs thousands to replace, so I may save some cash and use a GTX 480 instead!
Maybe. Or maybe its going to be done via compute shaders and not ready yet? It would be a good example for thier use.
Wheres the floating turds, used condoms, tampons and other nasties? Oh wait its not the british coast?
Looks like it could be new pc time.
But holy crap if you think about it this is what some games will be looking like in a few years. Just amazing.
Surely JJ Abrams is behind this - It did feel kinda like Star Trek: Underwater to me....
Looks good, surely it'll make my current rig look like a piece of crap - as usual.
It might be the hangover but that made me laugh. Hope they get rid of the dead Physx.
