Asus Xtreme Global Summit Competition Week 4 Winners
Posted on 21st Aug 2009 at 17:54 by Alex Watson with 90 comments
And so we reach the end... the end of the beginning, at any rate, as we're ready to announce the final five winners of tickets to our Asus Xtreme Global Summit event along with the prizes that entails.
This week's blog post was all about overclocking, and the question we asked was simple: "what single tweak, invention, feature, BIOS option or idea would make overclocking better for you?
Read on to see who the lucky winners are!
Winner 16: capnPedro
The capn nailed it with his suggestion, we feel: "Temperature probes which get the REAL, CORRECT temperature, and a BIOS/OS collaboration so software can actually read this value easily and reliably."
Winner 17: deltaworld
Deltaworld's suggestion appealed to our love of gadgets with his suggestion about using an iPhone app for overclocking:
"Have a Wi-Fi or BlueTooth connection directly to an iphone app that can then give you all the dials and parameters to adjust the overclocking, from Voltage Adjustments FSB adjustments/fan adjustments and the nice thing is.. you will always have your phone/iphone with you and no wires. Ideal if you want to show off your kit on a lan gaming convention and from a practical point of view the software can have pre-saved configured setups where one click would adjust everything from voltages to fan speeds so you could essentially use your iphone like a remote to switch to a low power consuming silent profile for media and internet viewing to another click for oc'd beast for gaming."
Winner 18: Mister_Tad
Mister_Tad's suggestion wasn't as flashy as some of the others, but it did seem eminently practical:
"I always thought having onboard dump would be useful when trying to figure out what's holding back an overclock. Have a small amount of flash memory on the motherboard that holds maybe 15 minutes of rolling logs of low level data. When your system reboots unexpectedly, pop in a USB stick and drag the logs across, or even access it from the OS. From this one may be able to determine where the failure is and figure out if the problem is voltage/cooling, which component gave out etc."
Winner 19: crash32953295@msn.
We're not quite sure how wise a move it is to have your MSN address as your forum name, but hey, we liked Crash's suggestion of "an online community where people can share and create configs for people to overclock with." It's an idea that's come up in various forms quite a few times in this competition, and one we'd love to see happen with some support from motherboardmanufacturers.
Winner 20: MajorTom
And our final winner is MajorTom, weighing in with the importance of voltage when it comes to overclocking:
"I'd love to see a BIOS that could calculate and set the minimum safe, stable voltage for each component at their current settings. This would also be handy for undervolting. It would be one less thing to be concerned with until final minimal tweaks where you could set it manually."
And that's it! Winners, check your PMs and get in touch, we've got prize details for you. Thanks to everyone who entered, you've done yourselves and bit-tech proud with some really thoughtful suggestions and discussion. Stay tuned for coverage of the event, too!

Discuss in the forums ReplyWould be cool to have the entire team there... and Felix D so he can buy us all a round ;)
Anyone that needs a lift from Nottingham or the general midlands area? Fancy splitting fuel costs?
Balls... booked train tickets last night.
I would do but I'm staying in London for a few days now so I'll need them to get there and back!
I will have to try again, But cant wait its made my week, unfortunatly I still have work all week :( apart from Friday of course.
oh and for anyone that dosnt recognise the email its Inferno
Eager to meet you guys and Asus/BT staff !
As long as you're Inferno from my Steam list and epic.LAN and not an imposter :D
Andy
In all seriousness, if you plan on going for i paint in London later, i'd say dress for that. I would say wear whatever you are comfortable with, but i'm afraid of Fibble showing up naked :D
With the greasy hair and all that you might be able to attend, but not to enter the hotel xD
Jeans/Tshirt will be fine for me.
Myself (Alex) Clive and James from CPC will be there, along with Rich and Harry from bit, and hopefully Joe. Tim's away in Scotland so he won't be able to make it...
Should be a great afternoon!
I'm going to open this forum up for posting too, so you can start threads etc.
Andy
Woot! Its not a fake, il see all you guys there, sounds like its going to be a lot of fun
Would be really great !
Might be. Also helpful for people sorting out lifts, posting questions etc :)
about the blogs, say i gotten the AMD motherboard, and i never planned to buy an AMD processor or high voltage DDR3 RAM. how can i write about it?
i also don't want to reinstall my newly installed win7 for the 4890 ATI card. then how can i write about it
review?Sounds like a lot of work? Well, once you complete the posts, you’ll get a further prize – either the chance to play with Asus motherboard and graphics prototypes, or a trip to Taiwan to see inside Asus’ R&D Department."
Looking at that it doesnt actually say you have to "review" the unit as such even though "what its like to use" does kind of imply that. Sounds pretty cool to be honest and I am very much looking forward to it.
Andy
Meeting (almost) all of the bit tech team will be sweet as well ! A dream afternoon is coming on friday :
sweet hardware + cool people + prizes + pub (+ cheesecake ?)
Well then, going to sleep, I fly in tomorrow.
Really looking forward to meeting you all and having an afternoon of playing around.
with smart casual, does T-shirt count?
in A-levels and summer placement, it's all smart casual, and all had to wear a shirt. i can never get the hang of this.
Time wise, I'm not sure what's happening with the room before 1pm so you might need to amuse yourself for a bit if you're getting in at 11...
Your wish is sadly denied!
It's looking like I'll be wearing my Flock tshirt as it's the geekiest one I have.
My train is arriving at St Pancras for 12:14 so I've got a nice dash to the hotel. Although shouldn't take too long.. just got to take tube to Oxford Circus and change for northern line to TCR. Fun.
As for the drinks.. I'll be there (as I sort of suggested it) but I'll be limiting myself due to low funds and having to get to South London for 9pm.
I hope I don't end up winning a motherboard that means me having to spend ££££s on new kit to make it work. Video card would be better! <hint hint> ;)
I remember looking at it and my jaw dropping at its sheer awesesomeness.
And the only reason I get into London early is so im not late, if im there really early I will just go to my works head office in regents street and anoy my colleuges. :p
Intel p55 motherboard, however, it will be what i use for the next 2 years.
and either graphics card will mean selling my 260.
taking 11:34 train from Luton, arriving at St Pancras 12:08. is anyone else arriving at St Pancras at similar time want to go to hang out at yoyotech for a while?
(i need to buy an external DVD drive there)
my train to leave is at 7:30pm, how long do you think it'd take to get from the hotel to Paddington?
I'm getting in to St Pancras at around that time, 12:10 I seem to recall
EDIT: Actually probably 12:14, as I suspect I'm catching the same train as fibblesan
my prefered list would be: p55 mobo, 275, 4890 and AMD mobo. to be honest i really don't want to end up with 4890 as it'd mean a full re-install of my windows just to fully test it. and im sorry, AMD mobo will not be used at all.
so who's going to be in yoyotech at around 12:30?
YoYoTech is pretty close by - it's off Tottenham Court Road, here.
Also, just spoke to Asus, I think it will be all Nvidia GFX cards as they're having trouble getting stock of the ATI ones - the prizes arrive tomorrow so I'll see then.
Having a P45 based rig, the 4890 would be my top pick. Or the 'mystery' board would be nice if you could manage to get some charitable donations of a LGA1156 CPU and RAM :p. But I'm happy to just get anything at all. lol
it's a shame, my BFG t-shirt is at my parents :( don't have any other geeky shirts unfortunately.
What is this yoyotech place then? I'm going to be in London early (bus arrives at 9 AM or so, so i'll be glad to meet up anywhere :)
You can easily recognise me: tall white dude with brown curls and sleepy expression from the all-night busride :p
I'm not sure i have any geeky outfits to be honest, and i don't even have glasses, so i could almost pass for a normal person. Too bad the effect wears off as soon as i start talking :D
And for all the possibilities of prizes i have accomodation. A 4890 could be dropped in right next to my 4870, a P55 would become the base of my new main rig, and a 785GX would become my first meddling into the wonderful world of the HTPC. Maybe the GTX275 would be a bit odd, as my 4870 would have to make room, but it will still be used and appreceated :D
Is that due to stock clearing for the looming arrival of the 5xxx series? ;)
ah, right. i forgot about it. kept thinking Asus is motherboard only.
But I dont mind either way,
Also talking about what we look like, here is a picture of me

I have lost most of the hair these days, though the goatee is still here.
Prize wise, as everyone else has said, anything would be awesome! But the only things I could use would be either graphics cards (preferably GTX275!) or the AMD motherboard as I have just ordered X3 720!
Prizes sorted according to gaming and overclocking on the day apparently... hope I get the graphics card!! (would be coming up from a 7800GT!)
if it's AMD, im stuffed. haven't touched them in ages. but then, not so sure on i7 overclocking either.
So probably bit of everything for gaming and overclocking! Ive always used AMD anyway, but for me its more about the fun of the event!
Looking forward to meeting you all :)
I'll probably try and get to yoyo tech before the event but won't have much time as I get to Charring Cross just after 12:00.
Probably be wearing something with an autobot logo on it :D
When it comes to overclocking, I don't know what I'm doing with an AMD :| Should be great fun.
Yes. 5 minutes walk. Walk down New Oxford Street past the Dominion Theatre (the one that always seems to have 'We Will Rock You' on) then take 3rd left onto Bloomsbury Street. Hotel is a bit on the left.. posh thing, can't miss it.
This is the exact way I'm coming also. I've got basically 40 minutes to get from St Pancras to the hotel via tube, lol.
Yeah seems like it. The 10:28 from Nottingham? I'll be in 1st class though ;)
Anyway I'm with Inferno and calling mere on this also!
I might arrive a bit earlier than 1pm to get to meet you guys, and have a little chat.
I hope we'll get loads of Asus merchandising (RoG T-shirts !!!!) qs well as the prizes...
Crikey, I've never been known as one to skimp, but even I think 1st class rail is a waste of money!
I'll be in the back with the rest of the plebs :D
I could not even book a seat on my train!
It was £4 more than standard. Worth it for free drinks and a newspaper to read, as well as the extra legroom ;)
(thanks to Asus for paying lol)
Thanks asus
any word on the prizes?
Prize for anybody chartering a private jet!
Prizes are looking awesome - just spent a few hours with Asus setting up the event. Those who win the mobos will also get CPUs :) Graphics cards are all GTX 285s, overclocked w/ custom coolers. Plus we have game prizes, CPC subs etc etc.
Going to be great :)
just been on Crysis for a bit, and got beaten bad, haven't played it for a long time, and i wasn't good on its launch anyway. in fact, im not good at any game, all i play are for fun, so don't think i'll be walking away with the prize of my choice.
can't wait for tomorrow, really want to play around with new hardware and talk to Asus engineers. i want BIOS fine tuned fan controller menu!
Can't wait to see you all, been that excited that I've been down since tues!
Andy
Just arrived in London at my cheapass Hostel, this is very good news to come online for!
Too bad i suck at gaming too, and have 0 experience in overclocking either AMD or Nehalem.
The whole event is a great experience, and i would have come and liked it even without the prizes, but this is just the icing on the cheesecake Man, this is going to rock!
At the event, it might be possible to record our gaming FAILS with fraps. Also would be a nice way to get benches, though they'd probably have to be blurred out because of the NDA, right?
Ah well, see you all in a few hours! I'll be outside the hotel or yoyotech, whichever i feel like.
