Asus Xtreme Global Summit Competition Week 3 Winners

Posted on 18th Aug 2009 at 16:16 by Alex Watson with 47 comments

Alex Watson
So, here we are in the fourth week of the Asus Xtreme Global Summit competition, so we’ve got another five winners to announce. Last week’s post covered Asus’ T.Probe VRM technology and after such a techy post, the question we posed was a fun one:

“The challenge involves coming up with a new name for a Republic of Gamers motherboard - we've seen the Maximus (1, 2 and 3), the Commando, the Crosshair, the Rampage... what should follow this illustrious line-up?”

Read on to see who the winners were after the jump!

This was a fun one to judge, and there were some excellent suggestions that made us actually LOL – although we liked HugoB’s suggestion of the Asus Felix (“ every time you boot it up it displays a random poem”), the fact Hugo’s another journalist means we decided instead to opt for some suggestions from others readers.

Winner 11: wuyanxu
We liked wuyanxu’s argument that “names should have a background”, and we could really see his suggestion of names based on fighter planes being taken up.

Winner 12: bradders2125
Our second winner this week is bradders2125, with three names inspired by the Greeks. Best of all was the “Asus Athena - Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, handicrafts and reason. Kind of sums up some of the things it [a motherboard] gets used for.”

Winner 13: yakyb
Yakyb’s post was one of the funniest in the thread:

“How about the Asus Simba (the powerful version), or the Pumba (the slightly bloated version), or the Timone (the quirky overclocker).”

Winner 14: Omnituens
While we can’t see Asus and Disney getting together for a killer line of overclocking motherboards, we’re all for promoting science here at bit-tech, and wholeheartedly endorse Omnituens’ suggestion of the “Asus Oppenheimer - DESTROYER OF BENCHMARKS”.

Winner 15: flibblesan
This week’s final winner had a trio of good suggestions, including the Asus Behemoth.

Congratulations to all the winners – I’ll be dropping you a PM with further details, so check your forum messages!

We’ve still got five tickets to give away. Stay tuned to the bit-tech blog for your chance to win!

Have you tried checking www.thetrainline.com? And also try and travel after 9:30am...
flibblesan 18th August 2009, 20:24 Quote
Yeh, done that. £34 return from Nottingham traveling after 10:30.
wuyanxu 18th August 2009, 20:27 Quote
they covers travel expenses, but does it cover london underground? i'll need a day pass in zone 1
Omnituens 18th August 2009, 20:32 Quote
I think It's going to be too hard for me to get there, I might have to ask them to give the prize to someone else :'(
flibblesan 18th August 2009, 20:38 Quote
wuyanxu: It'll be total travel costs up to £50. Luckily I've still got an Oyster card with £5 on it. You only need to get to Tottenham Court Road tube station which is actually not a long walk from Euston rail station. Walking from St Pancras or Kings Cross isn't that far either. I'd say 40min.

Yes, of course - you get up to £50 to help you get there, which (we looked into this) will cover most of the UK travelling after 10 am or so... :)

Aww man that sucks seriously. Hope you can work something out. Where are you trying to come from?

Any qs, about travel costs etc, drop Emily an email (her address is in the email I've sent out to the winners)

Manchester :( I'd have to lug my LAN gear around with me all day, and even with just my laptop that's going to KILL me.

Sorry, I forgot to actually read the forum rather than the blog page. I would have worked it out from Stockport!
Omnituens 18th August 2009, 21:02 Quote
Unless I can get someone else from around here to win next week's prize, and doesnt mind lugging me and my stuff to london and dropping me off at the lan on the way back.... :P

Edit: Plan is starting to come together.... the main problem is cost, as both my train tickets comes to over £100... which is just lolamount.

Edit Pro Plus: Better plan as emerged, looks like I might be able to make it!

£100 from Manchester to Euston? Thats madness. Probably cheaper on the Megabus.
Xtrafresh 19th August 2009, 10:45 Quote
Haha, i'm having similar problems.

I am going to come there with an overnight bus from Eurolines, arriving in London at 8AM... then i still need a place to stay the night on friday (anyone? pretty please? ), after which i get up early for another refreshing 10 hour bus ride. The costs are about 120 euro total, so about 50/ish are from my own budget.

Oh well, it'll be fun regardless, and i get to see London, i've never been there. ;)
flibblesan 19th August 2009, 11:53 Quote
Whoah thats a lot. Was it cheaper than flying?
wuyanxu 19th August 2009, 12:09 Quote
wow, xtrafresh is so dedicated. i probably won't have entered if i was in Bristol or Southampton, which are 3 hours and 1.5 hours of train ride respectively. im passing through London on Friday, going to my parents for the bank holiday weekend, so it's really convenient.

out of interest, are we going to be able to pay around with P55 and LGA1156 in the overclocking part?

Yup, flying and ferries all amounted to about 150-200 euros if you count the additional transport to and from (air)ports. I even checked the train, which i would have preferred, but that's 183 euros :(

I'm just excited that i won something, and any of those prizes are very compatible with my upgrade plans anyway, so in the end i'm "saving money" this way. ;)
g3n3tiX 19th August 2009, 12:39 Quote
Well, I have to FLY as I'm not even in the UK, so you're not the worst ones :p (apart from you Xtrafresh, I share your € related pains))
(I'm a week 2 winner by the way)
Still, it will be very interesting.
wuyanxu 19th August 2009, 12:57 Quote
i only want the intel motherboard. all others are useless to me to be honest. personally really looking forward to the gaming and overclocking fun
flibblesan 19th August 2009, 13:13 Quote
Thought the motherboard was AMD. Not terribly useful to me as I'm an Intel user, but it'll be a fun event. I love overclocking systems so I'll be well at home. I just hope they don't get mad with me if I break any systems!

which is the third lot of prizes. I assume first lot go to Week 1 winners, second lot to week 2 winners, and so on? This is the one thing I'm confused about.

Well, there's more to it. There's also the blogging experience afterwards, and after that, there's supposedly this:
Quote:
7: The AX: GS Blogger experience will begin after the AX: GS UK event, on Tuesday 15th September, 2009 and will end on the 16th October, 2009. After this period Asus will be in contact to organise and arrange delivery of a new Asus product as a thank you for taking part, or to sponsor a trip to Taiwan to see the Asus R&D department.
flibblesan 19th August 2009, 22:44 Quote
Yeah got that also. We attend the Xtreme event, then for 4 weeks we all write about the event and the ASUS product we have been given. If we all do it properly then we will all get additional products to keep and the best writer will get a trip to Taiwan.

Thats how I read it, lol
Xtrafresh 19th August 2009, 22:47 Quote
i guess that means it's game on! May the best nerd man win!

Well we dont know how many could end up going to Taiwan. Guess we'll find out at the event.

By the way, are we all hitting the pub after the event? That includes bit-tech folk;)
Xtrafresh 20th August 2009, 00:11 Quote
good plan, i'm there!

Excellent. Hopefully the bit-tech crowd should know some decent places around there. I'll be staying in SE London so I'll be out as long as I can get a bus south of the river.

Now all I gotta do is find my way there from my relatives place in Kent.

Omni that sucks, you do know Maak lives in London and is going to SL so you could beg him to wait I mean he will still have work on that day and I cant see this going on into the evening, So it would then just be a case of lugging you lan gear down for the day.

If that helps :p

Inferno BTW as they dont have the function to change user names on the forum, And I kinda type it in the wrong field :p
