Since bit-tech.net moved to the central Dennis offices in London, we’ve all had a real bitch of a commute. It takes two hours each way, meaning that I don’t get home now until 8PM at the earliest. The upside of this is that I’m getting a lot more reading done on the train on the way to work. The downside is that I’m at home less, so can’t do as much PC gaming.
The reduction in time is making me value my gaming time a lot more too – so I’m reluctant to just replay my old catalogue of games and I don’t want to go over previously-reviewed titles.
Thus, I wanted to put it out there to bit-tech.net readers and take suggestions on the matter; What game should I play next?
Seriously, I’ll take any suggestion as long as it is on PC and not something I’ve already revieed. Old or new, I’ll look through your suggestions, pick one, buy it, play it and do my next blog post on it. The more obscure the suggestion, the better.

That request though isn’t quite enough for me to pad out and make a full blog post out of. Instead, I’ll talk about my continued adventure through the Hitman franchise, which I’ve been slowly exploring ever since I bought the full collection a few weeks back.
I’ve just got through to Hitman: Blood Money and I’ve already tagged it as one of my favourite games. I love that it’s just so much more free and explorative than the previous games – every level has dozens of ways to kill your targets, ways to frame your work as an accident. You can engage in hand-to-hand combat, throw weapons, upgrade your arsenal and read about your exploits in the newspaper at the end of every level.
What I love most though is the wry sense of humour that the game has and the way it uses it to turn common film and game motifs on their head. The game especially seems to pick on the conventions of classic cartoons, using them as inspiration for the levels.

There’s one level for example where you have to assassinate a mobster who’s been put into witness protection. He’s living in the suburbs, guarded by a handful of FBI suits and he’s always grumbling about that kid next door – the one with the treehouse and the air rifle. It’s a clear tip of the hat to the old Dennis cartoons and it conjures a gleeful sense of childish mischief. It’s mischief turned macabre though, as this time you’re loading bullets into your rifle, not pellets, and your aiming to assassinate, not annoy.
A few levels later there’s another similar mission, set during Mardi Gras where you have to take down three other assassins all disguised in Big Bird outfits. Stalking one prey in particular it isn’t hard to uncover the silent way to kill one of them – there’s a music shop where one of them pauses in patrol, directly beneath a piano.
Rigging the piano to fall isn’t hard work, but suppressing the giggles when you look back on the event later and realise you’ve essentially re-enacted a scene from the Roadrunner cartoons is. That dark sense of humour that IO Interactive built into Hitman: Blood Money is something I truly appreciate – so bear that in mind when you’re recommending me a game to occupy myself with over the coming weeks.
Joe, Out.

Discuss in the forumsIn fact the ONLY game (given a lot of thought) I can think of I don't think you've played is Evil Genius, and I wouldn't even recommend that. Lol.
Z (yup thats it just Z old game but i loved every minute of it plus it was very different for its time and the humour in the game was awesome)
Pretty sure i be able to recommend a few more when i get home and go thro my collection
Supposed to be games I haven't reviewed...
Seriously?
I'd be playing "Find me a new job!".
Not played that, so it's on the list.
Another game I've been meaning to play.
Played (and blogged about) multiples times.
Played Enter the Matrix, but not Just Cause = on the list.
Not played either of those, though I have heard of them. On the list.
This is my favourite suggestion - I've been meaning to play this for a LONG time. Jordan Mechner is one of my favourite designers and, from what I hear, if you're willing to embrace the game's unusual mechanic then it's almost infinitely replayable.
Keep them coming!
Edit: that sounds sarcastic, its not
Edit 2: DAMN so does that!
Other than that, come to the dark side, play some Diablo 2...
Laz
7th Guest for a bit of nostalgia (if you can find a copy) I lent mine to a my cousin years ago and never got it back (I'll have to see if he's still got it).
Giants was supposed to be good, I've got it but never got past the first level (PC was to low-spec to play it properly when I first bought it, and once I'd upgraded I'd forgotton all about it) but the humor in it sounds like your kind of game.
Like the other Discworld games, it's point-and-click with loads of bewildering characters and strange conversations, but this time the setting is a really filmic experience. It's definately a change from what you are currently playing.
I do own that and have tried it, but to be honest I just couldn't get into it. I bought it in a double-pack with Planescape: Torment for £1 though - bargain!
The game that got me into games all those years ago!
Also, same question to you Joe, I'd love to see some kind of list of old/good reccommended games, Im always on the look out for an obg
(oldy but goody)
PSP - Monster Island Hunter 2 - Massively successful in Japan, to be honest I didnt quite get into it myself but I can kind of see the appeal. And as well, ultimately it is a game with great scope.
DS- Whole host of titles, all about the Castlevania series (I remember you guys reviewed orders of ecclesia but I cant remember what else)and recently I've been loving a bit of N plus
Iphone - Why on earth are people not playing Zombie Attack?!
Here's my list of obscurities, for the curious:
http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2007/12/28/the_best_games_you_ve_never_played/1
I'd tag some others on that of course. I consider Planescape: Torment, System Shock 2, Thief, Grim Fandango, No One Lives Forever and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time to be required reading, depending on your tastes. Especially Thief (even if you just play Deadly Shadows, the most recent title) and Planescape.
Dark Reign
Dark Reign 2
Imperium Galactica
Imperium Galactica II
Pax Imperia
Haegemonia
Earth 2140
Earth 2150
Earth 2160
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Rollercoaster Tycoon (guilty pleasure, this one...)
Re-install coming up :D
Syndicate Wars
Dungeon Keeper / Dungeon Keeper 2
StarLancer
Rise of Nations / Rise of Legends
Rise of the Triad
Star Wars: Rebel Assault (going back a bit too far now)
Point N Click (which the M.I. fan you are, you've probably already played)
The Dig
Full Throttle
Guilty
Indianna Jones and the Lost City of Atlantis
Simon the Sorcerer (on offer on GOG I believe)
Beneath a Steel Sky
Discworld / Discworld 2: Missing! Presumed...
edit:
Arx Fatalis £2.99 on Steam. Bought this in Game ages ago. Not a bad game. Magic uses mouse gestures (sort of like the seals on the first DS Castlevania game).
Sam & Max Episodes on Steam (Ep 4 is free)
Jade Empire (KOTOR with Ninja instead of Jedi)
I have Haegemonia but I never got around to playing it, got it because it looked a bit like Homeworld. I hope they bring out another Homeworld.
I bought Nexus off Steam a few months back but have been busy so never actually got around to playing it. I need more time.
Also Joe, if you have a 2 hour commute I remember some trains having power sockets, maybe you should invest in a semi decent laptop with a 4850 or something in it.
Do actually have that, as I bought it with Hitman. I started it and have yet to truly get into it. So, I think that's off the list.
Anyways, I recommend Civilization. Yes, #1! Also Septerra Core, repetitive and kinda weird but still a lot of fun. :)
It was last time I played it.
Hostile Waters: An awesome update of carrier command - superb in almost every way
Freespace 2: One of my all time favourite games. Epic in scale and ambition and almost flawlessly accomplished. Utterly unappreciated.
Have you considered/played Prey?
I played Prey when it first came out. It was kind of good.
Also, since it is on the topic, I decided to get Hitman: Blood Money after you mentioning it is the best in the series (only ever played number 2, but loved it).
So far, so good!
N'ah, not really. Probably going to be Diablo 2. I've heard it's a good game, it's relevant and it's a game I should probably play.
Then Far Cry 2.
Really? Not sure how you are going to get on with Diablo 2 then as it's fairly similar.
Titan Quest really starts to get good as you level up and use the skill points, it also has a great story. Would suggest giving it another chance and playing a little longer.
And WH40K should get another go, it's pretty addiciting even on a single player skirmish, especially with the eldar(which i suck at).
Or just revisit Grim Fandango, SimCity 3000, and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2.
Just a final and random note that may contain spoilers:
Far Cry 2 gets really pointless after Act 2, and if you like variety, you may not like this game as much as say...STALKER: Clear Sky or Shadow of Chernobyl.
how about Defense Grid, Crayon Physics Deluxe?
Played both, not played, played and reviewed ;)
- Sam & Max (the very old originals)
- Gold Rush (played it on a monochrome Mac)
- Police Quest
- Rippley's Believe it or not
Other genres:
- Jagged Alliance 2 (X-Com-like, you hire mercenaries to help a guerilla in the Carribbean)
- Tie Fighter
- Deadlock
- Heroes of Might and Magic
- Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far (or any other CC title, besides the 1st)
- Theme Hospital (hehe)
- Detroit (Management game. This one's hard to find!)
- Capitalism II (Best business game ever ever ever!)
- Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix II (Oh wait, no racing games, huh)
- IL-2 Sturmovik (I guess no flight sims either?)
- Grand Prix Manager 2 (Gotta love Microprose!)
- Pirates! (The new one, maybe?)
- Colonization (The old one!)
- Sim Farm / Sim Ant
Thinking about it, I would love an updated review on X-Com with nostalgic comments. It should take just a few minutes to write! :)
I can understand you didn't have a Nintendo64 to play GoldenEye. I didn't either. But didn't you have any friends urging you to come over and play with them? Damn, that thing was addicting to play with friends! And I'm the type that insists: "Shooters? only on PC!!"
Go figure! :P
OK.. So this is more of a nostalgy post rather than suggestions.. Fun, anyway! :D
Dark Reign I, a nice RTS. The second one wasn't that good.
Jade Empire is a really nice try too. I love the concept behind it. Not much fun, it gets a little repetitive, but you should try it.
Syndicate and/or Syndicate wars. Try syndicate wars if you need to choose one.. "persuadetron"... fantastic game!
Ultima VII... simply the best RPG ever!... Simple! Although I have to admit the best story in a game is surelly PS: Torment (I wish they had released the graphic novel they were inteting years ago), overall U7 is still the best RPG ever.
Nox is a good pseudo RPG too. I hate the shalow sense of humor on it, but still a nice game.
I know you like it but for everyone else that didn't played it b4, try "Hitman: Blood money". It's one of the oldest games i have and still play sometimes. The oldest I still play is Ultima VII: The Black Gate and ultima VII: Serpent Isle... Ooooo.. there's Mazes of Galious remake too. But i wouldn't recomend it.. it was from MSX 2+... Too old. It's just for the nostalgia!
But you still have to keep in mind all those are OLD games. A four out of 10 for Diablo? thats just SO unfair...
Indiana jones and the fate of atlantis.. a good lucasarts title.
Prey is awfull! Just because you could get upside down and there were LOTS of shiny stuff the game were overrated... I just don't get it...
Temple of elemental evil. An AD&D RPG from atari.. I think the last RPG from atari. A good one.
What about one simulation? An helicpter like simulation? I know you are not much into simulation (me too, hated HAWX) but try "G Police"
Oooo... Try "Rune".. its a melee FPS set in the nordic mythogy. Not really good in single player, but really addictive in multiplayer!
In rune you can rip your friends arms and head and use it as weapons. I am sure you will like it a lot!
that game was sick for it's time.. I actually went back and beat it again (remember playing it as a kid).. trippy music too..
otherwise I suggest you stay away from pokemon platinum.. I actually beat this (yeah I know) pure rubbish!!
