how the hell did nvidia managed to release the 480 cards
their yields were in single digits
can some one tell me how they managed to get enough of them ?????

All the rumour and doomsday predictions were all bollocks, just more fodder for the ATi troll fangirls. I'd wait for the official Bit-tech word on it.

Googled it: that is a pretty cool little case!
What's with all the Nvidia hate? It seems all the ATI fanbois are crawling out of the woodwork! The benchmarks for the 470 show it to have performance somewhere in between a 5850 and a 5870, with figures closer to the 5870 in some cases. If this card is priced appropriately (£275 seems to be the figure everyone mentions) then it fits in nicely. If it's sold for £250 (IF) then it immediately makes the 5850 obsolete unless ATI drop the price back to £200 (oh, that's right, you already have the 'amazing' 5830 for that price...).
I'm expecting the 480 to be quite the card though. Can't wait for the review!
I still remember where ATI where with the HD2xxx in the start and look how well its matured.
Is the same sort of path Nvidia is taking, this is a whole new architecture for them right?
And if this is their starting point I'm impressed and can only imagine how well it will scale with time.

I LOL'd till I cried.
Bit like me when I read your post " nVidia can't eek a ton more performance "....you think they can make it go faster by giving it a fright? LOL, I suspect you meant eke, but it made me laugh all the same.
I want fermi to happen, but for different reasons than FPS in crysis. Nvidia have the gpgpu lead even now, no doubts about that. Fermi *should* be even faster. More than anything though, I wish these 2 manufacturers could reach some common ground & work together more closely on the future of GPU tech rather than just playing one-upmanship. If they can get their collective acts together, we might see server & services technology able to change quite drastically. Nvidia are making the bigger positive moves in that direction right now, fermi or not. OpenCL is *not* enough.
I agree SimoomiZ. If you aren't watercooling, you have no business buying any of these anyway. The problem though is that these are not meant to be actually used, as in, sitting on a desk in some pimply-faced geek's bedroom playing COD4.
These parts are meant to get some press coverage and nothing else. This means that it's impractical to go for watercooling, since they are swapped in and out of test benches too often.

I think you'd be surprised, when OCUK had the air cooled Asus Mars cards in stock, at a similar price to this new Ati based card, a buyer boasted of the framerate he was now attaining in his fav game. Even the lowly figure of 1000 units is enough for quite a few to end up that way, in the rigs of peeps who have money to burn, KLF style.
Of course I understand your point though - about it just being a demonstration of technical prowess by team Asus, kind of like a proof of concept model, much like Sony's fantastic OLED TV everyone drooled over at a previous exhibition. Only for Sony to then announce that they aren't making any more .

I mean, any buyer would be expected to team it with other equally leet parts, result ; a mind bogglingly expensive, noisy air cooled rig? Silent wc'ed, Sli'ed 5870s, cooled by a quad rad , in nice large case all could be had for the price of one of those, it represents a very odd choice.
Yeh like +1. Just stupid show pieces with a few extra FPS...

/sigh, Ok, yes, I meant eke. Sometimes my brain moves faster than my fingers. I should also state that I have absolutely against nVidia cards. I'll re-iterate what I said over on the Maximum PC boards. Of my last 6 video cards, I have had the following FX5200, 2x6800 XT's, X1900 GT, 8600 GT, 8800 GTX, ATI 5770 (4 to 2 in favor of nVidia counting the 2 6800 XT's in SLI as a single card purchase). I'm really hoping that this latest round smacks nVidia around enough to wake them up and make them realize that if they are going to charge an exorbitantly premium price, they have to justify it with a FAR superior product. Not these nickle and dime performance improvements (compared to ATI or their previous products) they've done for the past 4 years (Sorry nVidia fans, but Physx simply isn't worth an extra $100 - 200 depending on the card). I will gladly buy an nVidia card again, but not until they earn my business back.
As far as getting together with ATI, I highly doubt that will ever happen. The companies are polar opposites in too many ways and there's a lot of bad blood. Besides, in general, competition is far better for innovation in the corporate world. Now if they were competing open-source communities, then yes I think there would be much more to gain by them coming together.
P.S: It's Nvidia HAS the gpgpu lead even now., not "Nvidia have the gpgpu lead even now".
Regarding the Nvidia stuff, here's my take on the rumormill.
Charlie is right about the problems Fermi has faced. The very large die combined with engineering challanges have left them without the product they wanted with yield a far cry from where it needs to be to be a truly profitable product. But TSMC has produced nearly 10,000 wafers for the 470 and 480; they're bound to get a few thousand fully functional chips for a GT480, even if only a single digit percentile of them function as such.
They will have the 480 available at launch, but will it be available afterwards? All signs point to there being no more cards after the initial lineup burns out, with about 6,500 (+/-1,500) GT480s worldwide. The 470 is likely not to continue beyond its initial production run either. To get the yields on this chip to an acceptable level, Nvidia probably needs to re-engineer the chip at the lowest level to compensate for the issues present in TSMC's 40nm process. The problem is, by the time this is completed, the rest of the world will be moving on to 28nm.
There's not really much hope for the 40nm generation of Fermi, so we'll probably have to wait for the next generation to see Nvidia release a high end product that is competitive with the 5XXX/6XXX family of Radeon cards in more than a few benchmarks and GPU-compute applications. The 5870 has substantially better yields than the GT470 and GT480, and there's no getting around that any time soon. Even if Fermi turns out to be superior to the 5870 (early benchmarks are indicating it is not), Nvidia is unlikely to be able to ship enough product to satisfy high end demand.
With 7 months already behind them, ATI is essentially the winner by default in this generation. By the end of the year, their Northern Islands refresh will be out the door. If things are as bad as they look for Fermi, Nvidia won't have an answer for that product either, for at least several months.
I can't wait till March 26th when Nvidia reveals Fermi and we get some real benchmark scores from an "un-biased" source. If Fermi proves to be better than so be it. I just want the price of Hd 5870 and the Hd 5850 to drop so I can upgrade. ATi has a great product at a better price when faced with competition of course. Remember two HD 4890 @ 1 ghz for $400 total beat a $500 295 gtx in every game except for non optimized Crysis.

I would be gobsmacked if that is true, I think they will stick to 1000 units.

ReplyFor the price of 6 screens and the ATI-6 card, you'll be left with a semi. :/
Not to mention that 6 doesnt really work.. but you can read about it in our article.

It doesn't even excite me that much..

the nvidia fans can't wait to mindlessly follow.. funny all the secrecy, I tend to believe it's going to be a big hot fail just watch :D

look if fermi knocks up min fps 20% then thats a 50% price increase well spent.. .deminishing returns etc...
