I had to use the kit lens for the panorama because my 28-80 wasn't wide enough to get the whole of 101 into the shot comfortably (important when you factor in stitching it together). I'm hoping to go back later this year to see some friends that I didn't see this time around - if I do, I'll be taking the pano again with a prime lens to get much better clarity/sharpness.

Which prime is that? Personally I found the Canon 16-35 much better the 20mm prime I have. There would be a very good site for comparing lenses here. The 50mm f/1.4 is a very good choice if budget is a concern, just means more stiching.
I would also suggest that you use a pano head of some sort, parallaxing is horrible to try and fix. LoL Gigapan. :D
I teach English to IT professionals in Taiwan. The whole country is set to learn English to help bring more business into the country. I have found the Taiwanese to be friendly, generous, and willing to go an extra step to be gracious hosts and make visitors feel at home. My students are so eager to learn English better to make it easier to communicate with foreigners. And the whole economy thing is true. Poor people make their own money by running their own businesses and farms. And children actually appreciate getting a good education and work hard to do well in school, unlike the ones in the US. I have expat friends here who work for Nokia, HTC, and Pentium, and they say the same things.
Taiwan definitely deserves its accolades for being on the forefront of the IT industry.
