Hi Glider....You did a wonderful job with these articles. I was looking for an alternative to Window$ Home $erver and you took me almost there. I am noobie to Linux but enjoy learning. Are you planning a part III?

I remember Glider saying that if you have ideas for a good subject, there might turn up an article about how to do it. He wasn't gonna make one by himself, if there wasn't the need for one. Just say what you are interested in knowing about, and he might look into it.

I've been using PuTTY and UltraVNC Viewer without any issues for a couple of months now. The only glitch I suffer from is when my Xubuntu box goes headless and I try connecting to it from other computers. UVNC viewer cannot seem to resolve the correct resolution from my Xubuntu box and keeps giving me only 640x480 (or the like).
One thing I've noticed is that when I temporarily attach a monitor to my Xubuntu box, UVNC viewer then defaults to the correct resolution. After the Xubuntu box reboots, however, the screen resolution glitch comes back.
I've tried newer versions of UltraVNC Viewer to no effect. Anyone have the same issues and/or have tips for this problem? Thanks and cheers!
I have this same problem too and would also like an answer if anyone knows. I also have a few other problems that if anyone knows how to solve I would appreciate:
1. I can't seem to set a static IP address up, anyone have any experience with this?
2. I haven't downloaded the no-ip package, because I wanted to try out the forwarding first. I got the forwarding on 2222 to work but when I try forwarding 80 to 12345 it doesn't work, do I need to have no-ip set up for the second forward to work?

I would think two different boxes means that it is not box specific, but that is not my main concern as XFCE is too resource heavy to run on my box. I would like to get the ports forwarded correctly but the guide really doesn't apply for my router(Linksys) apparently so would appreciate any troubleshooting tips.
Well what I mean is that i belive that the problem is due to some standard settings in the Xubuntu sofware. What linksys router do you have? I have a linksys router myself, so mabye I can help.

I have a Linksys WRT54G version 6, with the latest firmware. I got port 2222 to forward, so if I link to http://probablyforever.serveblog.net:2222/ I can see some SSH and system information, forwarding 80 to 12345 isn't working though and I think it is because I am forwarding a range and not one to one. I can't find those settings though
i forwarded the ports and now i cannot connect to the server at all. If i leave off the :2222 then i get the it works screen. Checking from the server input localhost into the browser goes to the it works screen

I have a SMC 2804WBRv2 router and follwed the instructions to forward ports 2222 and 12345
Well when you access from another machine it shouldn't be localhost it should be the ip address of the machine. Since you can SSH in you can still access the machine fine, the port forwarding just didn't work right. So undo what you did, visit portforward.com and find a guide.
If so, it appears your router wont let your forward external ports to different internal ones (ie, 22 has to goto 22)
Port triggering probably wont help, as i believe it requires your PC to trigger the port
For webmin you need to forward the appropriate port (it doesn't work off 80 or 443)
I believe the default port is 10000
However, again, i strongly recommend you don't open webmin up to the Internet, if you do make SURE you turn on SSL encryption, and NEVER use it from wireless

Port Forward with your router, the link in the guide will most likely have instructions, unless it is my router...
Alright, can you still SSH in?
Which ports did you forward?

From a previous entry this appears to be my problem with port forward, my router looks like this
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/SMC/2804WBRV2/Serious_Sam_The_Second_Encounter.htm
I will think about upgrading the router soon, but I am still not sure why when accessing localhost from my network it takes me to the apache2-default screen

Both articles have been great, well written and easy to follow. In the future will there be a TFTP section?
