My server's been up and running without issues for month, so I think it's safe to post a few tips:

1)the instructions indicate that if you want to use a graphical editor, you can install GEDIT. There is one already in the stock installation of Xubuntu - mousepad, It works fine in setting this up

2) this is touched on a few times, and I think it bears repeating - if you copy the commnand line instructions from here and paste into your terminal, be sure to overtype the "-" characters . . . the ones on the webpages were not the same characters as linux was expecting. I spent 2 days till I figured that out.

3) In my case I also installed the azureus torrent client, with the webgui front end. I did it because:
a - (weak) I wanted to let upnp handle the portforwarding
b - (better) I wanted to run safepeer
c - (best) I need to encrypt the traffic due to packet shaping by my ISP, and torrentflux looked like it would be hard.
I needed to do a search to get the most recent version, as the azureus in the package manager was outdated.

4) I have been messing around with WIKIs recently and the TWIKI install found in packet manager works fine with all of this. Now I also have a personal WIKI

so far there have been no issues with either my XP box or my apple boxes using the server.

Next I want to check out part 2 and see what upgrades I need

Hi and thanks for your feedback. I am still at the beginning of the server installation process. How did you go about installing azereus?

Tip:
"install <package name> ubuntu" in google - the first result usually tells you what you want to know

Hi, I've tried looking through the large number of posts here, but I'm not sure I've found my answer!
I'm a bit new to this, got an eeepc and decided linux is the future!
I've installed samba, but when i try to add user/passwd i get the following message:
Failed to modify password entry for user
Any ideas? Is there somewhere to set up the lists of users? Am I just rubbish?
Thanks

Think I found my problems on Page 14! Thanks anyway

I have downloaded Xubuntu 7.10 Live CD and everything is there but once I install the disk Samba goes missing. Does anyone have any ideas what I should do...

Hello

Just finish my installation and editing of the smb.conf .

That's where i'm stuck: (Now, lets check if our hard work did it's job. From another workstation (a Windows XP one, for instance), open )
I can't connect to the server from my computer. When you edit the "smb.conf" <b>do you delete all the content of that file and replace it by the one posted?</b>

I'm a photographer and I work with 3 computers, so i'm trying to get this server to be our central storage for images.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thank you

Hello

Somehow I can get to the share folder, after setting it up, by Going "Start-run-IPaddress" enter.
Why can't i get to the server by typing the address in the browser?

Yep and still counting...

I guess i'm gonna have to go thru the 18 pages to find a solution, as I'm also having problems with "proftpd.conf" line 98... sounds familiar?

just to check when you are entering the IP address into the run box you are remembering to put 2 backslashes in first right?

ie:
Code:
\\192.168.1.2

yes, i tried every thing, but I think that I should maybe reconfigure the workgroup , since I already have a workgroup set up for my other computers.

Is there a way to add the server to the existing workgroup? or should I create a new workgroup ?

Thanks

Somehow, setting up this server has been a real headache for me, now downloading UltraVNC, after opening the zip file, and opening the .exe my virus protection ( pccillin) detects a virus and stop the process. They talk about this issue on the forum of UlraVNC, so now i'm trying to fix this one, anything else...????

I never saw this, I can' t tell you that I am a big fan of UltraVNC but it definitely works fine once you get it set up. Is Putty working/do you have a connection?

I am no guru but when connecting from XP to my server through explorer (mapping or otherwise) I have to make sure and change the user name to my user and pass of the server to actually see the home folder. e.g. My XP user is tommy and my Server user is Pete. When mapping I have to set the path to homes and select change user name to Pete and the correct password otherwise it connects to the shared folders. Also, I find that if I establish a connection incorrectly until I reboot I am stuck with that folder no matter what i do. I am sure there is another answer but this all works for me.

Sorry to double post but missed this one.

Yes, I ended up doing a Google on the subject and just copying in a new smb.conf

Regarding Torrent softwares. Just my opinion but Transmission/Clutch is hard to beat for speed and reliability.

Thank you for your feedback

Well, my mistake:<0) I was trying to get access to the server thru the firefox browser, I didn't think of the internal browser which is explorer ... booooooo....
It worked

Regarding UltraVNC , it really is a problem, do a search, UltraVNC virus , and see what you come up with, it seems like Trend Micro system and other virus protection systems are in the wrong somehow, they are aware of it, I'm trying to fix this... damn it's taking me way too long to set this server up...

Thanks again

hello
Me again, well , I'm almost done, very painfull work, I thought I was masochist, but man this is too much...
First , I know that the man called "Glider" has put a lot of work and time into this, I thank him for this...
On the other hand, there is quite a few inconsistency, you have to be able to read btwn the lines, over and over, pages after pages , to find where you went wrong. I noticed few places where the text and directions don't match the "Image capture", like when he said to "chown 777 torrent" when on the capture image it says "chmod 777 torrent", I know about chmod, but never heard of "chown", so I figured it was "chmod"... so when I go to the folder "tf" i get an error message " table torrentflux.tf_settings doesn't exist.
Damn it was my last line of this guide, I'm almost done!!!!
Also , somewhere else you forgot to mention to cd home ( I fell into it, someone else missed that one too, I finally found my mistake by comparing with the screen shot.).

What went wrong regarding the table?

Thank you

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME.
I am new to all this but really want to give it ago. I have downloaded Xubuntu 7.04 and installed it. The first thing the guide says is to completely remove openoffice.org-common; this is not on my system. The guide also says to install Samba, this is not on my system. Have I downloaded the wrong Xubuntu (xubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386) If I look for these packages on the Live CD they are there but not on my computer after the installation. I know if I have failed at step one I have little change of completing this guide but please someone help me at least give it a go....

Thanks in advance.

He seems to be a legend over here... I wonder why ;) But I know he's finishing his Master thesis this month, with a deadline of April, 16th, so he's quite busy...

Well, chmod changes the permissions of a file, chown changes the ownership (man chmod). However, I'd find it weird that I have typed "chown 777" somewhere... That is completely wrong syntax wise...

That should set up the tables. But be sure to type the command, not copy/paste it... the Bit site and a linux terminal use different encodings.

Well, open up Synaptics and search for 'openoffice' if it isn't installed (not checked) that's good. The reverse goes for 'samba', search for it and check it. In case the list you get is empty, try updating your sources list. I don't know where to click (don't use Ubuntu), but in a terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
And then retry the search. It's possible that in the newer XUbuntu versions default packages have changed.

if it isnt there (which i doubt, im sure its a standard part of ubuntu) then you dont have a problem

on ubuntu open office is under (but this is probably slightly different in kubuntu)
Applications -> Office

are you sure your not copying the instruction from the website and the - is breaking?
Code:
sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-common

you can do
Code:
dpkg -l | grep "openoffice"
(its -L and the pipe command, | (shift \))
to see if its installed

That's why your installing it ....

On the command line you can use
[code]sudo apt-get install samba[/quote]

Or just use the synaptic package manager (on ubuntu, System -> Administration -> Synaptic package manager)

Thanks for replying Glider & completemadness. The probelms seemed to be because I didn't have a connection to the net, once updated the packages I needed were there. I have tried starting again, installing Xubuntu with the active connection from the start and now I have got bigger problems. Every time I try to install Xubuntu it gets to the partition section and stops saying "Failed to create a file system, The ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0)(sda) failed. I have tried installing Windows XP, defraging it, getting ride of any partitions, checked the harddrive and checked the live CD but still the same error. I have also tried a different harddrive. ANY IDEAS?
