I'm pretty sure winning would make me feel guilty. Shipping a 6ft robot to Iowa sounds expensive.
On a different note, thanks for drawing my attention to this game. I've been a big fan of RTS games for years, and this is the most impressive-looking one I've seen. I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before this, though.
gonna be honest the robot doesn't interest me much and if I did win I would be more than willing to give it away for the cost of shipping. I really just want the hardware. That rig is bad ass
OK guys - I don't mean to sound rude, but here is the Final Word on the "but what if the winner isn't a bit-tech forum member with 500,000 posts" issue. This mod was commissioned by THQ and the robot's fate was ultimately up to their Marketing Department. It was originally conceived as a trade show mule, to be shipped around Europe for various LAN events etc for the purposes of promoting the game.
Somewhere along the line, they had a change of heart and decided such a work of art would be wasted if it just sat in their lobby looking pretty where most of the time only THQ staff would see it. So instead, they decided to give something back to their fans and give the system away to the community.
I don't want to blunt, but the emphasis is on the wider Supreme Commander community, not exclusively the bit-tech community. We were more than happy to host the competition but please understand - this is not the same as previous bit-tech competitions.
Honestly, the winner might well be someone who in fact has never heard of bit-tech (if such people still exist ;) ) but they might be a SupCom fanboy who found the link on THQ.com or any of the many other sites linking to this promotion.
For our regular readers who might feel a bit put out by that, we are planning more promotions with our partners and these will be aimed more at generating interest from within our community than courting a wider audience.
;) Works for me, It's random anyway and unless I win (& wouldn't that be sweet) it I won't really know the winner anyway. The only reason I'd think it would be nice to see a bit-tech regular win is just so they could post it here: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=3298&page=138&pp=20 But maybe this contest will add a few new good people as fans of the site.
I'm going to defy you all by saying that I don't want to win! That way, fate will screw me over and send me a massive robot. No, seriously, I wouldn't mind at all but I just bought (well, got for christmas with my partly funding it) a new PC and it would be such a waste if I then crossed over to using a robot for my main rig. All this giving away stuff is cool 'n all but morally speaking I feel uncomfortable by going "OMFG I totally wanna win this!!!111oneone11!1", that makes me feel a bit pompous. Let's just say I'm interested, k?
Now I think about it, a bit-tech reader winning is pretty unlikely, seeing as this is a) a global competition and b) it's being advertised everywhere if I read Geoff's post correctly.
there's a small logistics problem here. ok so the mod is won by someone.
most people don't have a really freaking big house.
hell, i live in a moderately freaking big house and i still can't think of anywhere i could put it without incurring the wrath of the others who live here.
so seriously, isn't the size going to be a major, major issue for anyone winning this?
i predict: whoever wins it will strip the hardware, put a lamer PC inside, and sell it on ebay.

I would personally use it - hell I'll use anything that isn't a Dell. It would be awesome though. Scare the hell out of the grandparents if you turn the lights off.

if i won it. i would do things the other way round. put my pc inside. and sell the components (as im a ati/amd fanboy) and then upgrade my pc with the funds the amd/ati way :)
If I won it I'd start making the mech case / desk I've been thinking of for about a year. These two would then stand side by side in my basement game room (when I finish that - I'm 1/3 done).

ReplyToo frickin right, annoys me too. Tehy'll probably win it as well, and then never return to Bit again..
Yeah, It'd totally suck if someone that doesn't frequent bit-tech wins the gear and the case.
:) well thanks for the best laugh i've had all week. :)

Does that all make sense?
